I am surprised your car has a set of breaker points in it. Someone must have performed an engine swap at some time. You should have an electronic breaker less distributor. But, since you don't set the points gap at 35 thousands. The vacuum supply for the advance should be hooked to a ported vacuum off the carb. It should only have vacuum when the carb comes off an idle. If you hook it to a port that has constant vacuum it will be advanced at all times and will cause engine ping and detonation.

It doesn't unscrew. If the knob comes off the stem, it is held on by a metal tab inside the hole in the knob. use a pick to depress the tab and pull it off. Otherwise, there should be a spring-loaded button on the headlight switch that you push to pull the knob stem out.
