Make sure that your brake switch at the pedal is not broken or loose alos check the wiring connector at the brake light switch, if it is ok then the problem is in the switch at the shifter itself it is a safety feature to preven accidental drive away of vehicles.

MY 2002 FORD ESCORT AUTOMATIC IS HARD TO PUT IN GEAR.DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY?

If you are parking on a hill, or an incline make sure to use your parking brake. When you park put your foot on the regular brake first and then apply the parking brake then shift into park. This will keep the car in place and not put pressure on the transmission. When you are about to leave do the same. Apple the regular brake, then shift in drive or reverse, then release the parking brake.

to test for worn clutch put in second gear.as you let out the clutch note were your bit point is if high near the end of travel .if clutch is gone .you will find the car still in tick over. find a place to do this that is clear in front of you.foot cover the brake while other foot on the clutch.

Have standard automatic floor shifter--can not get car out of park (1993 Escort Wagon)

Hello, Most likely if you look under the dash of your car, at the Brake pedal levers, you will find a switch. This is the switch that makes it necessary to put your foot on the brake before shifting.

Usually a foot can move or break this switch and the car does not know the Brake pedal is being pressed. Most likely your Brake lights are not working either. This switch is known as an Interlock Brake switch and is available at local autoparts stores.

You may just need to reposition this switch if it is not damaged and it will continue to work. Or the plastic may be broken and you will need a new one.

I have a 1997 Ford Escort Wagon and I don't have a problem while I am driving, but when I slow up to a stop. The motor will come to a rough idle when I stop and sometimes the motor will die. I can restart...

try this test
place in neutral with the park brake on
start the engine if it idles alright put your foot on the brake
if it falters or plays up ,it is a vacuum leak in the brake booster
replace the booster

I have a 98 escort wagon that wont start replaced

I know this is going to sound stupid, but I've done it before, did you put he car in park? You might also want to try it in neutral also. If neither of these two tests work, you can try to jump across the solinoid on the fender well. Don't stand in front of the car, and make sure that the parking brake is set, just in case it starts and tries to run you down. If jumping across the two big posts cranks the motor, chances are either the solinoid or the electrical half of the ignition switch is bad.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

High iddle in 95 escort while in drive high rpm when put into park

recheck the timming marks on the timming belt sometimes when the release the belt tenisioner it go's off in cam timming this changes the vacume on the low end and this could be your problem.
A Smog station can somtimes locate if youre dealing with fuel or timming. But I think this is what it is. C69
