Question about 2000 Ford Taurus
In my Ford Taurus (2000, I think), the heater only works in about 10-second bursts. If you turn it on, it works for about 10 seconds, then the temperature goes down quickly. If you turn it off for about 2 minutes, it will work for another 10 seconds. The fan does not turn off when the temperature drops. The air from the vents just starts losing temperature. The AC works fine. Any thoughts?

If this happens on and off while driving, then you are low on coolant. The system needs purged. Fill the resevoir, Let it warm up to operating temperture. turn it off, let it cool down some. check and fill as necessary. Keep check on it for a couple of days.

Well as far as knowing exactly which hose to put where i cant help. Other than tell you to buy a chiltons manual at advance auto. Now there is a box in the passenger side floor under the dash of your taurus. this box is actually where the flipper is that switches from floor, to vents, and of course your defroster. So you can reach up there manually and switch yours to defrost. Just turn your heater on and(blower motor) then look for the black box should be like one foot by 1 foot. There will be a little siver selector switch on the side of this box. Just flip this switch by hand and you will make your hot air go up to your defroster, also while you are under there, look for loose vacuum hoses, this is normally cause by children hitting these hoses with their feet and disconnecting them. So i am sure now that you know where to actually look you can fix this problem. Hope this helps ya

heater valve to let the coolant into the heater core is not working the heater cluster in your dash that controls the heat might be bad. it also controls the fan and air conditioner

Check to make sure your coolant is full. If it is carefully feel both of the hoses near the firewall that go to the heater core. Be careful the exhaust is right there and its HOT.
With the heater on both hoes should be about the same, if one is colder than the other you heater core is partially clogged and will need to be replaced or a shut off valve in the hose is not opening properly. I use a infrared digital thermometer so I don't have to reach in to check the temps.

have system evaced and see how much charge it has in it if its low it could do that if its over charged it could do that also.
