What size engine do you have? Is backfire out the exhust or intake? Also does it do it under a load or while idling or both?

Back firing ( explosions in the exhaust) can be from fuel mixture too rich and unburnt fuel is getting to the hot exhaust
possible causes for that are excessive fuel pressure , leaking injectors ,leaking injector seals
backfiring through the inlet manifold can be calve timing, ---cam advance servo-- valve staying open ---valve clearance , problem hydraulic cam follower , incorrect firing order for the plug wires, crank/cam position sensors or wiring
IN this country there is a joke about jeeps
Santa was late with the presents because he bought a jeep
( jeep add about Santa buying a jeep released by jeep)
Don't send it to a scrap yard as there are people who can fix jeeps

A diagnostic check at autozone said it was the speed sensor. Where is the speed sensor located on Jeep Grand Cherokee 1998 5.2?

Has to be on the back of the trans. Output Speed Sensor
Hope you can get it out, without lowering the trans,to clear the floor pan

Put that into your search engine and find what you need.
Sorry I can't give you the exact location down to the inch

Now hope you have a bad sensor
Codes don't tell you, that it is bad,or to replace it

I would drive the vehicle with a scanner on it ,and look at data, or run off the ground, and back probe with a meter or oscilloscope, to test. ( I know you can't do that)

My 98 jeep backfires and stalls out while driving at normal speeds I have replaced exaust a number of times as well as computer have also changed crank sensor.the shop I take it to insists on telling me...

i had a similar problem with a 1998 grand cherokee 4.0 had a no start condition changed the crank sensor the car started idled fine no codes till you drive it then it was giving p0430 p0460 misfire cylinder 4 and 6 and ran rough no speed didnt make sense ran good before sensor went bad removed new crank sensor on the bottom it has a round cardboard glued to it so it does not go in all the way and get caught by the flywheel and break its for the air gap . paper says it will shear off when you start the car problem was it wouldnt let the sensor go in far enough for the proper air gap so when i re-installed the sensor the second time i held it in with left hand tightened the bolt with right hand started the car and it idled fine again but when i drove it it was fine and no codes
