Do you have a check engine light lit on the dash ? Give a good look at wiring harness under hood an on the transmission for frayed wiring . With this happening when the vehicle is put into gear you may have a range selctor switch problem !

  • Jeff Armer Mar 23, 2015

Yea you have a real good one here , sounds like a elctronic problem for sure. Your vehicle has a transmission control module an a gear selector switch an electronic controls in the transmission an has connection to the tps throttle position sensor. these sensor circuits operate on a 5 volt referance from the control modules and if there was a short in the gear selector switch it very well could shut down the engine !

If you could find the gear selector switch an disconnect it , an then put it in gear an see if it shuts off the car !

The gear selector switch is most likely on the transmission.

Car in park turn key starter engages engine starts and you can hear the Bendix still spinning in the ring gear put car into drive and then they stop spending

Does the starter engage again when you go back to park ?
Shifting from park to drive would cut the circuit from the key switch to the starter. The neutral safety switch prevents you from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.
I would say the key switch is not turning off power to the starter when you go from start to run.

What is wrong with my car when it jerks in drive

jerks when?

moving the shift lever. with hand?

moving car. in gear, name the gear, drive, L or reverse?

jerks from, 1 to 2nd gear, 2nd to 3? or ? (or when IT down shifts)

pretend we are blind (we are) and cant drive car,(hopeless) and

tell us exactly what works and dont work driving.

hot /cold engine, fast /slow/ accelerating/ decelerating, up hills and what gears.

if engine is hot, is your idle at 800 RPM parked, in park.

y/s

if not the idle controls are out of control and when you shift to drive

IT will jerk. this is an engine problem.

there are lots of other symptoms.

Any Idea's ?

It half sounds like a problem with the safety switch for the starter lockout. On a stick shift it may be on the clutch pedal but is on the brake pedal for automatics. This assures that your foot is on the brake pedal so the vehicle does not lurch when you start it.

This would show up in the restarting process, but it is intended to lock out the starter and would not interfere with an engine that is already running. So to keep the engine running feathering would not have anything to do with the starter lockout.

Dtc 0700 jerks when shifting from reverse to drive

The transaxle Control Module (TCM) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transaxle control. When the TCM detects a malfunction with the control, a signal is send to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to trigger the Engine Light or Service Engine Soon light. The ECM stores the P0700 code and it means the TCM detected a malfunction with the transaxle controls.

Car jerks with loud knock when shifting from park to drive

Ok the knock is your flex discs on the drive shaft are bad along with the carrier bearing. Replace before you get stranded or it comes loose.
Fuel distributor may need work if it is hard to start when warm, Replace OVP relay by battery also, its always an issue.

I just bought a 1992 eagle talon and one of the belts is making a high pitched squeeking sometimes until the car warms up or if I cycle the gears a few times. THe belt looks fine, no frays or anything....

As for the high pitched squeeking. Just replace the serpentine belt. Just because you don't notice any crack or no frays, does not mean that the belt is good. My car was doing the same thing and when I replaced the belt everything was fine.

In regards to jumping when shifting. First take a look at the RPM's. If the RPM's are high when shifting from Drive to Reverse this will cause the jumping. If the RPM's are around 750 to 850 then you might have to get the transmission checked out.

Hopfully this will get you going in the right direction. Good luck...

Have your transmission oil filter changed;
it is located under the transmission pan
The oil is what makes the transmission shift
When you shut off the engine it stops the transmission pump then when you start up again the transmission shifts until the filter clogs again
