The dealer is right...the 89 firebird did not come with a chipped key antitheft system. You should never have had a key with a chip to begin with.

How to reset my security on my 1997 pontiac grand prix

Unfortunately there is no resetting. You need to either replace your ignition lock cylinder and have the new ones tumbler pins changed to your original key. Or have your VATSS system bypassed. A stereo shop that installs remote start systems will be able to help you with the bypass.

How do I reset the security anti theft system on a 92 buick Rivera

There is no reset on that year's system. There is no reset for VATS. But luckily VATS is so antiquated you can easily bypass it. The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

How can I bypass the anti-theft?

Completely impractical to bypass the anti-theft system in most cases.

Removing the engine ECU and having it decoded is the only alternative to using the correctly coded key in a functioning and correctly coded system.

2002. Why is anti-theft light on, preventing it from starting?

The most common cause is the chip in the key does not match the security code, or the security module has failed. The chip in the key must match the factory setting to allow the car to start.
If it worked before you replaced the lock cylinder, you need to have a new key with the same old chip cut to the new lock.

Having problems with turning key in the iqnition tryed moving shifter ,the steering wheel still turns but will not lock

If your key has the little "chip" or resistor in it, that may be the problem. Try cleaning the chip to see if that helps. It could be the electronics inside the tumbler are not reading the chip. Try leaving the key in the ignition in the off position for 10 minutes then try it. If that didn't help then the anti theft system if probably failing. If it is, then you have two options. One is to take it to a dealership for repair. The dealership will have to replace 3 parts counting the key, which will cost you about $1000. The second option is to bypass the anti theft system. The only bypass that really works is at the following website: http://newrockies.ca/vapsbypass.

Cadillac seville won't start

I've got an even cheaper and easier solution, instead of buying a new cylinder, find that plug and snip the orange wires going to the old cylinder. Then remove the resistor chip from the key and solder each of the the wires to each side. this will fool the car into thinking the correct resistor chip is in place, allowing you to use the original key or any copies with or without resistor chips. i just did this to my caddy and it roared to life! :)
