Question about 1998 Ford Escort
Timing is set by setting the bottom crankshaft's pulleys mark (it's a very small dimple on the engine side of the pulley and is VERY hard to see) - you should line it up at 12 o'clock position (there's a mark on the engine to align it). The top crankshaft's pulley will need to be set so that the 1st cylinder piston is at TDC by aligning its mark (small arrow) (you might need to rotate the crankshaft a full cycle around to its mark to obtain this). Once these are set, place the timing belt in place.
