Question about 2000 Husaberg Fe 400

1 Answer

1998 Husaberg FE400E hard to start

Just got this bike had to flush gas tank and rebuild the carb. You can set choke kick it 2 times to get fuel in the cylinder and kick it a third time to start it and it will kick so hard it will hurt your leg. You can keep on and it might start or not. Checked valve lash checked timing faze. If it does crank it's too rich on bottom end adjusting the carb makes no difference.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery damaged or nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in the fuel system.
7. Water or dirt in the carburetor.
8. Intake air leak.
9. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow.
10. Choke valve inoperative.
11. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).
12. Ignition is not functioning properly (possible sensor failure).
13. Faulty ignition coil.
14. Valves sticking.

SOURCE: throotle sticking on my FE400e 03 model

Hi ..... The majority of throttles close with the use of a second cable and/or the return spring on the carb. Make sure you have approx' 0.2 of a movement before throttle starts to open, second cable (closing one) is 'tight', it can be adjusted at bars and carb and that the cables are correctly routed (manual will have a diagram). Try lubricating cable(s) and throttle tube on the bars. It'll be something simple .......... let us know how you get on.

Starts with full choke. however requires additional throttle assist. stalls when choke closed (motor warmed)

Hi Mel:
I'd tend to agree with you that it is a fuel supply issue.
Some ideas:
- Make sure the fuel filter is clean and that fuel flows freely through it.
- I'd drain the gas tank and carb.
- Fill the gas tank with fresh gas.
- Flush the carb.
At this point if it doesn't run properly you can try backing out the mixture screw 1/2 turn to see if riching it up will help. If t does not, I'd be looking at dis-mantling and cleaning the carb as it could possibly be gummed up.
- What is the history that got you to this problem? Bike sitting for a long time? Something had to have happened between when it ran good, and when it started giving you grief. That will isolate the problem.
Cheers.

My cr 80 won't start but it's popping like it won't s to replaced spark plug an couple over things please help me sum one

Hi Lennard:
Cars and trucks section but CR80 sounds like a motorcycle. right?
You need two basic things:
1) Spark - pull the spark plug, connect the lead, hold against the head, and spin it over. Spark shoulld be hot and blue.
2) Fuel - Drain tank and fill with fresh gas
Drain and flush carb
If it has a filter, make sure that fuel is flowing through it.
Try a "normal" start........... choke, kick over 5 times. If no start, remove plug and check for fuel in cylinder. Wet plug means no spark. Dry plug means no fuel.
If dry plug try priming the carb (give it a squirt of gas with choke off)
It should try to start.
To let me know how you're doing, reply as a comment on this post.
Cheers.

My boyfriend has a Yamaha Virago 1100 and he is having problems with the bike starting. The bike will start, the RPM's just keep jumping and then it will cut off. He's cleaned the fuel filter, flushed

I don't expect you to know exactly what what your bf did with his ride, but a carb needs to be more than just 'flushed' if problems are suspected. It needs to be carefully cleaned and inspected, and set to factory specs that it may have fallen out of over the years.

Assuming that he's a wizard and did all that appropriately, might I suggest checking the ignition coils per the factory workshop manual?

did you check to make sure the fuel line is not kinked when the tank is set down in place and mak sure the fuel filter is not to high , make sure the petcock is not truned off or in between run and reserve the smoking could just be excess gas in the carbs from to much choke ,it's actually fouling the plugs and could make mis-fire noises and to much smoke at the mufflers

Runs for five seconds after being tilted up and put back down.

Trash in the tank fuel line outlet. When you tilt it the trash moves and lets some gas in. Set it down and the trash goes back in the hole and shuts off the gas. No pressure to feed fuel so when you pull choke makes it run rich and then starves for gas again. Dump gas, disconnect the line at the carb. Put a clean tube (drinking straw, plastic tube, whatever will fit so you don't get gas in your mouth) in the gas line and blow air into the tank through the filter clearing the obstruction. Reconnect line then see if it runs longer before it shut off. If it does clean the tank and flush the dirt out.
If that doesn't change anything then it has to be a carb diaphragm leaking and it need a rebuild kit and fuel system flush.

Need to know how to rebuild the carb on a 3.0 hp

The carb sounds like a vacu-jet, very easy to rebuild. Remove it from the tank but be careful not to damage the siphon tube. Then make sure to check for foreign matter in the tank (big problem with this system), clean and flush it. The idle screw is easy, the other is set by going from idle to full throttle quickly and adjusting it just so it doesn't stumble

Starting problems

Check the compression. If it has low compression it will always be difficult to start. I have the same bike. It is a really good starter, comparatively to other older 'cycles I own. 1) Check the fuel level in the tank, and be sure to turn the fuel switch (left side of bike below tank and seat) to On, or even Reserve 2) In stock tuning, my bike likes full choke for cold start, in any ambient temperature, it likes to warm up with the choke on, until it starts to sputter from the rich mixture. 3) I believe this bike has vacuume tube that goes to the fuel petcock, this shuts off fuel to carbs when bike is not running. Thus if the bike has not run in a while, or the carbs drained, it will take several start attempts to get the carb float bowls filled. 4) This bike is hard to start if the battery is old or marginally charged. 5) Also pull the spark plugs, if they are brown, or black, change them. 6) check the air cleaner, if it is too dirty it will essentially act like a choke
