Question about 1985 Honda CBX

2 Answers

Timing for Honda TMX 155.

I don't have the manual for this bike. I've gapped the spark plug (new) using a hacksaw blade as a feeler gauge (don't have a set of feelers and to be frank don't know the correct gap either.) The bike starts and sounds good but takes a while and several kicks to get it to fire up. Am now wondering if the timing is correct? My main engine experience has been on conventional cars with very little on bikes. The bike was made in 1998 and I'm trying to help my son in law to get it running OK so he can work as a tricycle driver here in the Philippines.
Can you give me the information to set this up and the gap please? I do have an electrical meter which measures volts DC

Ignore the CBX and the year entered below I just entered those as your list did not have the TMX 155 model

I have twou TMX155 pero di naman masyadong nagiging problema ang Timing madali lang yan kung bago ang spark plug mo your not required to udjust it anymore kasi standard na po iyon, better chek the contactpoit kung sakto po sa kompresion stoke dapat po mga 15degrees po befor the top dedcenter compresion stroke nag start na po bumukas yung contact point, or 30 degrees befor top ded center dumidikit na po yung camlobe sa contactpoit arm yunpong camlobe yunpo yung nandun sa magneto na natatangal minsan yung may spring makikita nyo po yung isang side ng outside surface e mas mataas kesa dunsa kabila allways put the camlobe inline w/ the keyway po yung kunya yung parang half moon, pag ganon po ang alighnement ay walang problema, then balik po sa contact point timing kung tama din po yung timing, at nag luluko parin dapat po check nyo na yung ignition coil baka po damage na pag malamig pa ok pero po pag uminit na nagbabago napo yung delivery ng koryente so it should be replaced na, pag po ang TMX ay gamit na gamit sa tricycle after 6 years po ang advice kopo palitan po ang ignition coil, carburador at yung camlobe, para po maiwasan na palaging nagluluko kasi po wornout na po iyung mga pyesa, yung carburador pag 6 years na naka trycicle matakaw na po sa gasulina maski palitan pa ng karayum at dinarin po bumababa ang minor, yun naman pong camlobe ay masyado napng mababa kya mahirap na pong makuha yung accurate timing, yun namang ignition coil ay mahina na ang deliver ng koryente. ibang mechanick dinila inaadvice ito kasi ayaw nila gumastos ang costomer pero mas makakatipid kayo dito kesa pabalik balik sa mekaniko. yunpong makina as long na inaalagaan po ninyo sa langis dipo agad masisira yan at aslong na di anaabuso yung sobrang tulin sobrang bigat ng hatak aabot po yan ng 8 to 9 years bago mag overhoul. tnk's (ashley mercado)

My 1995 nissan pathfinder spark plugs require a .032 gap but I can't find a gauge that has .032. What to do?? Please help.

Hi. You will need to purchase a blade feeler gauge. This style gapping tool allows you to add and stack different size feeler gauge sizes and create the size you need.

What is gap

Hi, Mike pertaining to engine spark plugs, "GAP" is the distance between the positive and negative electrodes at the base of the plug and is measured in thousands of an inch or mm by using a round pin gap gauge or flat blade feeler gauge. Every engine manufacturer has a specific design-size-heat range- gapped spark plug. Gaps will vary depending on engine brand. Gap is also referred to in engines using a mechanical "POINTS" ignition system instead of electronic ignition (what is the points gap) for more information about your question and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please visit the websites below. Spark plug gap setting

Spark gap settings are individual to each engine so you'll need to look at your manual. But complete the task you will need to buy a set of feeler gauges.

Spark plug gap viva

Hi,

I'm not sure quite what you are asking for here. This particular gapping tool is for aviation engine spark plugs. The clue is in the AV at the end. They are available from aviation parts and accessory factors such as LAS & Aircraft Spruce and others. You can often pick them up at aero-jumbles that feature at local air-shows. The unit should have with it a number of ring adaptors, if buying second hand make sure you get the adaptors for the spark plugs you wish to use it for, otherwise it's useless! The ring adaptor screws onto the spark plug and then placed into the gapping tool. This gapping tool can only close the points gap, it cannot open them again if you close the gap too much, you need another tool to open the gap, I don't know the part number but it looks like a little spanner. Don't be tempted to open the gap with a screwdriver against the electrode, you'll crack the porcelain and right-off the plug. Best thing is to get some Champion Aviation spark plug feeler gauges, they are wire type gauges and not flat leaf type. Place the wire gauge between the gap and use the gapping tool to close the gap until it just jams the feeler gauge, stop there and do the other gaps in a similar way.

Adjusting the points

With points cover off, slowly bring engine to the highest point on the points cam.Its easiest to do this with the spark plug out,and slowly spin the engine with the kick start. Once you get it to the highest point on the points cam,the points should be "open". Insert feeler gauges untill you find the correct one...(it should have slight resistance). The check what the recommended gap is for that model. After finding the recomended gap,use the feeler gauge that matches the recomended gap,and isert between the points. There should be two screws, one on each end of the points. Loosen those two screws, and the body of the point will move, one way to "open": the gap,the other to "close" the gap. With feeler gauge between the points contact, close untill you feel slight resistance when moving the gauge back and forth, and tighten the set screws on the points body.

Need spark plug gap setting

You can consult the parts house where you purchased the plugs and they will probably have the exact gap information for the model, make and plug type. Now days about 50 thousands is pretty well normal. If it's an older model try about 35-40 thousands. The difference is the newer models have a hotter ignition and run at a lot higher voltage. Also the plugs are designed different on some of them. P.S. you can get a little disc about the size of a half dollar that starts out at pratically '0' and goes up liner to about 65 - 70 thousands. Costs about a buck and will fit on your key chain. dhgill1949
