sounds like might be your toner, specifically your black toner.
is this a non-standard toner or HP? IF it your toner you can try this:

Place a stip of opaqe tape or paper or the chip. When the printer detects a non-standard cartridge press the green (go) button. It will then reset the LCD to Ready.

You need to connect the unit via USB and then run the HP firmware update utility so that the current firmware can be installed. This error is usually caused when a firmware update is interrupted. Current firmware for this unit is 20100902.

You can try setting the printer back to fabric settings following this simple steps:
1) Turn the printer off
2) Now while the printer is off, press and Hold the down arrow and cancel button
3) Keep them depressed and turn the printer back on while holding those keys
4) you will see a message on the display that reads "permanent storage init" at this point you can release the buttons
After this steps you need to wait about 3-4 minutes and then the printer will come back to ready

When you changed from Network to USB cable, one or both of two things may have occurred.
First check your printers list in the control panel. You may find you have two apparent installations of the device. If so try a test page from each install and record the port settings for the one that responds. Delete the other and re-test. If the machine fails to print on any setting, delete ALL installations for the device and re-install from fresh with the USB cable. You may also need to go into the settings on the device itself and disable any network settings.

Depending on the printer, remove the cartridge and then the print head under it. Run it under hot water until the water runs clear. Dry with kitchen towel and the on the computer go to printer properties and run a clean cycle, then run a test pattern. Also check that your paper is dry. Better quality paper produces better quality prints.

this error can be caused by a paper jam, or a little piece of paper in the toner area, Take the cartridge out and use a flashlight to check in the sides looking for paper. Other reason is that sometimes the sensor that detect the toner is out of place and in that case you can try to power cycle with the toner out before you install it again. Good luck
