Hi Muriel, it should be possible to connect the 2TB drive externally to the windows 7 laptop so that you can read your personal files on the 2TB drive. What you need is a USB to SATA hard drive docking station or a suitable disk caddy. If you give me the part number of the 2TB drive I should be able to recommend something. You don't need to reformat the drive.

    Something like this:

Recommend you get one that supports USB3 or 3.1 and must fit a SATA III 3.5" disk drive.
Once you have fitted the drive in the product just plug the USB cable into your old laptop and you should be able to read the files off the 2Tb drive. Good luck

SATA III is also sometimes called SATA 6Gb. USB3.x is also backwards compatible to USB2 but it is faster and will future proof you if you get a newer laptop.

Thanks once again Tony. I am not a total novice and I was keeping up with technology to some degree, or so I thought, until Microsoft decided they wanted to run my computer how they saw fit. I am in my 60's now so I guess I will be needing a bit more help and guidance with these things soon. LOL. Thanks again Tony your help is much appreciated. Have a great day.

Its not that simple. As far as I know the windows software is linked to the computer the disk comes from so it won't boot up if put in a different PC. There are other ways of doing this but not for the non-techie. Do you want windows 10 or would you be happy with windows 7 on the 2GTb disk ?

SOURCE: External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.

How to piggyback a larger hard drive on my dell dimension e310 computer

I think you are talking about adding the 500GB Hard Drive to your system. It will give you more Disk Space, but not more memory. If you want to add the drive just Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Case then notice how the hard drive that is already on your system is in the drive bay and the cables going into it. There should be another empty bay above or below for you to place the 500GB Drive. There are also some extra cables that will plug into the drive. Once you have the drive in place and the two cables plugged into it, put the case back on then plug the power cord and plug it up.

Your system will recognize the hard drive once windows boots up. Click Start/My Computer and you should see your Local C Drive and the new 500GB Drive. If not, shut the down then restart it and notice what key it says to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup and hit that key. Once you get into the setup look for the hard drives. You will probably see your old drive listed as Sata 0 or Sata 1. You want to take the next Sata that is available and set it to Auto so that it can automatically get your new drive's configuration. Once you do that, save it and exit out of the Bios then Reboot.

Once the system recognizes your new drive you can copy things from the old drive to it. You can't just copy programs, programs have to be installed to the new drive. But you can copy things like your documents, music, pictures and videos to free up space on your original drive. Also when you download and install things, it will default to going to drive c which is your old drive. You can change it to go to your new drive by just changing the letter c to whatever is assigned to your new drive. Most likely it will be drive d, but you can click Start/My Computer and see what the 500GB drive's letter is.

Maybe you friend had some cloning software where he could just clone your old drive onto your new 500GB Drive, then you could make the 500GB drive your Local C Drive by switching the cables.

Help is it possibol to upgrade lacie big disk extreme 500gb to 1tb or 2tb. thanks. FC

Maybe. If the current disk-drive has an IDE interface, then your 500GB disk-drive already is the largest IDE disk-drive ever produced. Or, if the current disk-drive has a SATA interface, then the sky (or the thickness of your wallet) is the limit.

I bought a Lacie 2TB hardrive and as soon as i plugged it in it caused problems for my 500GB model. It now will not copy large files, will not play films that are on it and keeps crashing, i have attempted...

Which "disk utilities" did you use?
Ones that check the "file-system-integrity" (that every file on the disk is listed in the table-of-contents, and that no 2 files point to the same block on the disk)?
Ones that write data to every block on the disk, and read the data back, to confirm that the disk can _correctly_ store data ?

What computer? Desktop? Laptop?

How much voltage/amperage does each USB port supply to the connected USB device?

Are you connecting the devices to a USB hub, or directly to your computer?

Do the external disk-drives each have their own power-supply?

I have a PS3 slim 120GB and I'm trying to put a 500GB Hard drive in and it asked to update software of 3.50 or later. i saved that data on a thumb drive PS3 folder then UPDATE folder just like your suppose...

Since your old hard drive would see the firmware update then the issue most likely was with the 500gb hard drive. Some times the drives come with a pre format that could have caused a problem with the PS3 detecting the hard drive.

I would try going through the like below to format the hard drive on the PS3 to see if this makes a difference.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

Seagate Freeagent Go 500 GB won't work.

im having the same problem tried a new drive enslosure but thats not working it says the drive is 2tb when its 500gb, which tells me the sata to usb board is fried so its not comunicationg with the computer even though the drive still spins, so im going to buy one of those sata to usb docking stations but ill have to take the drive out the case which will void the warranty. the last thing ill try is to buy a refirbished freeagent go and swap the sata to usb board, this is important, i have 200gb work of music that i need and i dont have a backup, ill post my efforts asap.
