There are adapters for almost anything and everything these days, and yes there are several USB adapters and several places to access the them. For online purchase "Amazon, and Ebay" would have them. Computer stores like "Fry's Electronics, Staples, Office Max, {etc} would carry them and there pretty cheap as well. That would be the SATA to USB adapter or the old Ribbon to USB adapter. In the future I would recommend purchasing and External Hard Drive and that comes with the attachments plus it's portable and they now have Storage into the Terabytes now so they have plenty of space and also if you lose data from a Hard Drive don't panic they have a program that's called HDD Data Recovery for lost data and even lost pics that were once on that Hard Drive.
Hope this helps.. Ian..

What is your cable connected to? Your drive may be mapped to a letter that is already being used, which hides it.

Right click My Computer, Select Manage
Highlight Disk Management
Find the device that your cable is connecting
Right click that device
Select change drive letter and path
Choose a drive letter that is not in use.

Trying to transfer data from an old harddrive i have (maxtor, diamondmax plus 9 80 GB ATA / 133 HDD) to My HP laptop

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

The new HDD uses a SATA data interface as well as a SATA power interface. You will need a SATA cable as well as a power supply that supports the SATA power connectors. Since this is an older machine you will probably need to buy a SATA cable and a Molex to SATA power connector. This should cover any cabling issues that you are having.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hi, where can i get an alternative power supply other than usb to charge it? regards pete

You can use any usb adapter with a jack suiting your device (commonly mini USB) and equal or higher power than the one mentioned on the device. Voltage for usb is 5.0 volts, still check what the device says. I have never seen a usb adapter on different voltage tho.
I had to buy a spare adapter for my Qtek 9000, chose Spyke, model PST-2005U. It gives a whole 2.0A, can charge up to four standard devices (0.5A each as per usb port standard). It has also easy to notice LED, data input, so that you can access the device even when charging, and a replaceable cable on a USB plug, so that you need just one cable to charge your device and connect it to PC.
Here it is: http://www.maxtronix.biz/product/2008-4-26/2008426122753.html
It has several options, so be careful.
