Hi Michael, I sent you the link to your Akai service manual
I hope you can access the Rec key
Suggestion, apply small amount of contact cleaner and test
If you apply a lot, dirt will inevitably form that can affect the proper functioning of the Open Tape
I hope you can solve the problem
Greetings Franco Dosil
Saludos Franco Dosil

SOURCE: head lights wont turn off

if you are saying the front side lights are going off but the headlights remain on ? then could you try this ? put the h/lights on main beam mode then whilst on main beam turn off lights if h/lights go off now ? then with lights still off put onto dipped beam with the switch/stick if h/light come on it is most probably the dipped beam headlights relay that has gone faulty as the h/lights have 2x relays 1for dip +1 for main beam if the above does not make any difference ? it may well be the switch assy hope this helps

I am not an expert in the repair of Akai units- most of the time I refuse them, however just to put you on the right path, the hum is coming from a power supply issue in the record audio section or may be in the bias section. You may need to put new Electrolytic caps in the power supply to resolve this. You can also scope the supplies on this deck to find the cause. I commonly work on Teac, Pioneer, Otari, Studer, Sony and better made decks. Some brands are real trouble and are more costly to repair due to poor construction.
I have been doing repairs for 40 years so far.

I need akai part number ms244708 for a 4000d

If you look around you will likely find many many Akai 4000 series reel decks for sale..some for parts.. Akai 4000 series decks used basically the same mechanism and same parts... 4000d, DS, DS II, DB, Incidentally, the Akai 1700, 1710, 1722, 1731 used the same basic mechanisms as the 4000. .

Make sure the recorder is not being used near a cellular device or transmitter. If it isnt, definitely send it to Olympus for service as there is nothing mechanical in the recorder that would cause this.

Why would my ds 4000 loose sections of the recording and then pick back up again.

If you have the VCVA set to on maybe the actuation level set too low; the recorder stops recording when the sound level does't reach that level.
Adjust the level to a higher value.

Plug in the Olympus DS-4000 handheld and the screen blinks erratically busy and then nothing pulls off of the card to the dictation module.

The memory is corrupted. You can reformat but that will delete all your files. If you need to recover the files, try PC Inspector Smart Recovery. I have had good success with that. Then you must reformat, or the problem will return. The problem is caused from static shocks to the recorder.

The slide switch on my Olympus DS-4000 digital dictation recorder is too sensitive, and often goes to the "Record" position when it should be "Off." Any suggestions in how to correct...

The slide switch on your Olympus DS-4000 probably needs to be replaced. You can ship it to to have your Olympus DS-4000 repaired. The repair will most likely run around $100,

However, my suggestion is that you upgrade to the Olympus DS-5000 digital voice recorder, the replacement for the DS-4000. It is a substantial upgrade and you will not regret it.

If you want to consider another brand, Philips has some great digital voice recorders. My favorite models are the Philips LFH-9600 and Philips LFH-9500 professional digital voice recorder.

The best place to purchase professional digital voice recorders is Your recorder will be shipped the same day your order and shipping is free.

Memory Error

I would suggest the XD card is corrupt. You may be able to copy the recording off the machine by copy and paste in windows explorer. If not then they are lost. Data recovery will not work very as the files are recorded in dss format.

Only option is to format the card on the PC.
