My daughters water softener filled up with water and now is losing water and salt on the bottom of the thing.

Probably need to clean the vortex / venturi. If you have iron in your water, you need to clean this about every 6-12 months, depending on how many ppm your water has).

It's an simple & easy procedure. First remove the cover of the softener (usually held on by 2 clips in front, 2 in back).

Once the cover is off, on the left side of the valve you will see a conical-shaped plastic part. (Usually gray, but not always). You will need to unscrew this (it's ok if water is still on, it's not under any pressure unless it's recharging) and clean the screen inside.

Most likely the screen will be caked with iron oxide (rust). I use a rust dissolver (such as Iron Out or any product designed to dissolve rust, but this is strong stuff, wear gloves or wash you hands immediately afterwards) and let the screen soak in that for 1/2 hour. If needed, you can speed the process along by using an old toothbrush and clean the screen, then soak a little longer, brush again, etc.

Once clean, replace the screen (mind the O-ring) and cover (hand tight is sufficient). Start a manual regeneration and clean the resin bed.

-If you decide to remove the rest of the parts in the vortex/venturi, be very careful not to lose anything. A few of these parts are very small. There should be a diagram of how the parts go together in your owners manual and on the machine itself. Usually these will not need cleaning, but doesn't hurt to go ahead and make certain. As to the two rubber parts with holes in them, the one with the larger hole goes on the bottom, and on both, the rounded side goes up. Watch carefully when you disassemble and remember so you can reassemble in the correct order with done.

As you have water in the brine tank (salt tank) keep an eye on this to prevent a salt bridge from forming. This is more prevalent with rock salt than pellets, but can form with any salt.

(I would strongly recommend you never use "rock salt" in any softener. It's full of dirt and you will absolutely need to clean out the brine tank at least annually or the dirt will end up being drawn into the softener. I use a good quality of salt pellets with an "red out" to maintain the resin against iron. These are usually good up to 2 ppm iron, anything over this and you should use a 1/2 box of Iron Out or similar, every 6 months).

If you suspect a salt bridge has formed, try pouring hot water onto the salt at one spot. This will dissolve the salt in that spot and form a "hole" in the salt. (Hot water dissolves salt faster than cold).
Once you break through, use a broom handle to break the salt surrounding the hole and it will collapse into the bottom of the brine tank. Suspect a salt bridge is the machine runs properly, but no soft water.

She probably does NOT need to replace this unit. What you perceived as a leak may only be water backing up in the brine tank and leaking out of the overflow.

How do I reset the time?

Very common with this type of unit. The switches are prone to corrosion and failure. You can buy a new timer from Sears (~$150) or off Ebay (~$100), or use a simple, no tools procedure, I use on my Sears softener.

-Unplug the softener.
-Carefully remove the top cover from the softener (usually 2 tabs in front and 2 in back).
-remove the timer panel (mine is held on by 2 tabs, one on each side).
-unplug the wiring to the timer.
-remove the timer (mine is held in place by a little plastic hook at each corner, remove one side and first and then the other.
-with the timer out, you can see the switches. while pressing on one of the switches, move your finger in a circular pattern (this rubs the contacts together on the inside of the switch, allowing the contact material to "grind" through the corrosion). Do this with all the switches.
-to reinstall, reverse the processes.

Water Softener full of water, not draining, or using salt

How old is the system ? Where does the system drain to ? If this is the softener you have (seems awful large for a household) it is probably the injector/nozzle assembly. I have attached a manual to help you. A restriction in the drain line could also be the problem. Fleck 2850s

Softener not filtering water through the salt and not draining water from tank

What model of water softener do you have ? The one you have on here is for a chemical, not a water softener. Usually it is the brine injector or commonly called the nozzle/venture that gets clogged and will not create a vacuum to draw out the brine water. If you can put a picture of your water softener on here. I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Have frigidaire front loading washing and my fabric softner stopped draining out of the dispencer. What should I do.

Remove the entire dispenser from the machine by pushing down on the catch usually rear left side. Take out the divider from the bleach and fabric softener and clean as much goo as you can get our of there using a toothpick or small screwdriver. Check the tube sections and clean completely. Test by putting it back together and slowly pouring water in the dispenser and it should fill then start draining once the level gets high enough. Stop filling and if level it should empty itself out.
You can help prevent this by diluting the softener in the dispenser without filling to the max.

The Softener is not going through.

you need to take the soapbox out and clean thoroughly. Pull the soapbox out to the point where you get resistance and the you will see a tab you press to release it fully. Do not force the soapbox out. Take it to the sink and clean with hot water. Softener can be like jello when it drys and will block the release.

Maytag a112 manual on how to add bleach AND fabric softener

Hi
Choosing Your Detergent, Bleach, and Fabric Softener..
Learn what the different items you need to wash your laundry.
Liquid Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softeners
When using liquid laundry detergent, you do not want to poor it directly on your laundry. The dyes in the liquid laundry soap could stain your clothing. You will want to start your washing machine and add the liquid laundry soap while the water is filling the washing machine.
You then can add your laundry once you have about and eighth of the washing machine tub filled. This will ensure your laundry doesn't become stained by the detergent. You should only add the amount that is poured into the cup to the fill line. When you add more, you could find yourself wading through mounds of bubbles overflowing from your washing machine.
The same reasoning applies to liquid fabric softeners. However, liquid fabric softeners are added to the washing cycle after the initial washing cycle is finished. You will want to add the fabric softener once the washing machine has filled with water and started to agitate. This keeps the fabric softener from touching the laundry and will work it into your clothing better.
Powdered Laundry Detergent
You will want to add one cup of loose laundry detergent to your washing machine in the same manner you would do the liquid laundry detergent. By doing this, the powdered laundry detergent will dissolve easier.
Bleach
When adding bleach to your laundry, there is a small triangular cup in the corner of your washing machine. By adding one cup of bleach into that dispenser, the bleach will be added to the laundry at a precise time during the wash cycle.
Setting Your Washing Machine
Most washing machines have three or four cycles. For instance, the Maytag Washer I have has four cycles, regular, permanent press, delicate, and soak.
Regular Washing Cycle
The regular cycle is used for the following types of clothes and other apparel:
• Jeans
• Towels
• Blankets
• Sheets
• Quilts
• Bedspreads
The soil types for this cycle are heavy, normal, and light. This means clothes or other articles that are lightly too heavily soiled should be washed in this cycle. This is due to the washing cycles can be set from a minimum of eight to fourteen minutes maximum. You can use all three of the water temperatures in this cycle.
1Permanent Press Washing Cycle
The permanent press washing cycle is used on the clothes that may or may not need to be ironed.
Such as:
• Blouses
• Shirts
• T-shirts
• Under garments. This would be your unmentionables and socks.
• Jackets
• Sheets
• Baby Clothing
The soil types for this wash cycle are normal and light. The washing times for the permanent press cycle are six minutes to ten minutes. You can use all three washing temperature modes for this cycle as well.
Delicate Washing Cycle
The delicate washing cycle is normally used for sweaters, cotton, silks, and other fabrics that need to be washed with care.
The soil types for the delicate cycle are normal and light. The washing times for the delicate cycle are four and six minutes. It is best to wash your delicate clothes in warm or cold water. Always wash clothing that is more than forty percent cotton in cold water to prevent shrinking.
Soak Washing Cycle
The soak cycle would be used for heavily soiled clothing, such as, football and baseball uniforms. This will help rid the uniforms of caked on mud and grass stains.
You can also use this cycle if you wish to only bleach your white's once a week or once a month with bleach.
Washing Your Laundry
Choose the cycle you need for your laundry. Add the laundry detergent, fabric softener, and bleach (remember regular liquid bleach is for white clothes only.) Start the washing machine and let fill to dissolve the dry detergent or to mix in the liquid detergent.
Now add your clothes to the washing machine. Clothes the lid so the washing machine will continue to wash your clothes.
If you are using a Laundromat, put your clothes in the washing area and shut the lid or door. Add your detergent and other cleaning items in the correct compartments. Put in the correct amount of change so the washer will start.

A debonder will soften cured CA (super glue). If parts are bonded incorrectly or your fingers are stuck together, a few drops will dissolve the CA in about a minute. Apply on bonded skin and roll apart fingers. Once stuck, use acetone to clean off softened CA, then wash off with soap and water.
