Removing the kindle from the leather cover w/light (purchased separately) , did the trick for me.
It wouldn't charge (the yellow light stayed on).
But when I removed the cover, it charged in about one hour!
I read about this fix in Amazon reviews for the Kindle.

My Kindle will not charge

Here's a possibility, I just plugged in my Kindle Paperwhite using the Kindle charger and USB cable. It wouldn't charge.
I kept it plugged in all afternoon and it accepted no charge although it showed the little lightning bolt on the icon suggesting it was charging.

I unplugged the charger (it has two prongs) and reversed it so
the logo was on top and, Lo and Behold it charged. It could be the plug is not omniidirectional (i.e. it is polarized)
