Just bought a Toshiba 42LX177. I'm using a Comcast DVR wired to the TV with HDMI. I also hooked up the coaxial cable. When I watch it through the HDMI input, closed captioning is always on. If I switch the input to the generic antenna in cable, closed captioning will work fine. I can turn it off, turn it on, adjust the settings, etc. No matter what I try, I can't turn closed captions off while it's on the HDMI input. This is, as you can imagine, a little frustrating. Any help anyone could offer would be much appreciated.
I had the same issue... here's what I did. If power off your cable box, then press the menu button, there's a selection to enable or disable Closed Captioning. This works for both HD series Motorola boxes Comcast offers, at least in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Hope this helps!

Comcast uses several different types of boxes but it sounds like the "box " is generating the closed caption and the set is simply displaying it. So what you should try if giving comcast a call and explain the problem and they can walk you through how to fix this problem

Are you using the cable box settings (or remote) or your TV's remote to select the closed captions. When you use the HDMI cable, you need to enable the captioning on the set top box. The TV can only interpret the CC if the signal goes through the tuner (coaxial cable input). It's a matter of how they built the hardware; the cc interpreter is part of the tuner.
Which cable provider do you have? I know with some providers, there isn't a direct CC button on the remote. With them you need to go through the Settings menu to enable the closed captions. If you add a comment with your provider, I may be able to help you enable the CC if there isn't a CC button on the cable remote.
I bought this television yesterday, bought the HDMI cord and hooked it up through my Comcast digital cable box. Every channel would display closed captioning, despite it's supposed inability to support that function.
In order to remove it, we had to turn off the cable box's ability to display closed captioning. To do that, turn off the cable box and hit menu to get to the setup menu. It is there that you will be able to turn off closed-captioning.
It has got to be the box. I would try to contact Scientific Atlanta if any way possible. The TV doesn't choose what inputs it shows CC.In other words, it would show it on all Inputs if it was the TV. Good luck and Thanks
If you want CC all of the time, this works well. But since you must power-off the cable box to change the setting, switching CC on and off is a real pain.
Your set-up is similar to mine (Sharp Aquos 46" and Comcast DVR). I have the composite output from the cable box going to a DVD-recorder and on to the TV. Whenever I need CC (usually to catch some mumbled dialog), I just rewind the DVR, and switch the TV input to the composite input. Then I switch back to HDMI to continue watching in HD.
if the comcast box is not hd then the control is with your tv/remote.
If the comcast box is hd, then you can control it from the comcast remote. To do this press cable, then power and in 2 seconds press menu to get to the hidden hd setup menu, scroll down to closed captions and set it to enabled or disabled then press power twice to get back to you rtv
You have to activate the closed caption option on your charter cable box. Power off your cable box and immediately push the menu button. A menu should appear where you can toggle captioning on/off. Good luck!
Had this happen on a Comcast box (Motorola DCT 6416 III)
Here's how to fix it:
Turn the cable box off, leave fully connected. Press Menu on the remote
The cable box internal menu will display (Not the Comcast one the Motorola one-- i.e. Display ratios-16:9 etc It's in black and white)
Use the arrows to cursor to the Closed Captioning and toggle to "Disabled" Press Manu again to exit and Voila!
I have a Sharp Aquos 46" and go a Comcast HD receiver as well, and had the same problem turning off the Closed Captioning. I order to turn it off you need to go into the box user setting by (starting w/ the cable box and tv on) pressing the power button for the cable box then the menu button for the cable box. This will open up the user settings menu. Just toggle CLOSED CAPTION to DISABLED.
