There is a capacitor dump that you can try.

Remove the batteries, wait 5-10 minutes.
With the batteries out, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds or so.
Put the batteries back in and your camera will start over (re-boot). You will know if it worked if you have to reset the date. But if that lens is really stuck you may be out of luck. The cost to repair it will exceed the cost of a new camera.

When I turn on the camera the lens comes out and then retracks and it says to turn the power off and on again. when I turn the camera off it says the same thing

Hi, I have to say that's a problem I've seen fairly often with the Sony W320. My suggestion is to take out the battery and make sure it's fully charged then put it back in. If that doesn't work I'd contact Sony.

The lens won't retrack

Unfortunately this is one of the most common problems in your standard 'point and shoot' camera. If you are unable to fix it yourself, the cost to repair something like this is generally about the same cost as a new one. You can try and take it to a friend or a local repair shop, but before you do try reading the information from this link. Hopefully that helps

The following blog outlines some repair options for an E18 lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

The zoom lens don't retrack Display don't

Charlene, It seems that there some dust that has entered between the lens housing and the camera body. To remove it you must use the vacuum cleaner to pull out the dust from this place. And keep switching on and off the camera so that it tries to move the lens inwards/outwards. If this does not work then the movement mechanism of the lens may have got stuck and would require more serious efforts for which you may or may not have to tools and knowledge.

There is no DYI fix for your damaged lens, and attempting to repair it yourself will likely cause serious damage to the camera. Professional repair is needed to fix this problem.

Lens goes out and stays out even with the batteries out.

OK you are probably going to think I am loony giving you this advise But No I am completely sane!

Get a can of compressed air OR acces to a compressor at your local garage Get them to fit the triggered air blower tool to it.

Blow around the lens in all the extension joins the firmly slap it in the palm of you hand with the side of the camera making contact with you palm. Do the procedure two or 3 times and inbetween the slaps turn it on to activate the lens mechanism. I have now fixed about 80 of these cameras with this method. I obtained the fix from Sony who charge $90 to do exactly the same. Keep at it as it will eventually work. One tip, make sure the battery is charged before you do this.
