It just wont shift up and down
The 2002 Honda Rancher ES has what is known as the "Electric Shift Program" system. Which means you can shift it electrically because it is equipped with shift up and shift down switches which energize a motor to shift the transmission for you. The back up to this system is a manual mechanical shift. If you can shift your Rancher manually, then there is nothing wrong with the transmission internally. It's something wrong with the parts related to Electric Shift system. The best way to troubleshoot this system is to have someone who understands this system fix it for you. But if you have a good understanding of electrical mechanical systems and metric tools and an electrical meter. You should be able to tackle this problem. Start by finding the Repair Manual for this specific Honda because the manual will give you precise steps to troubleshoot this problem. When I repaired my friends Honda TRX 350 ES Rancher, it was a broken leveling sensor located at the base of the engine in the front. It was broken in half and so it was not sending a signal to the ECU. So the ECU wouldn't let the electric shift operate. When I replaced the leveling sensor, the electric shift worked great.
Good Luck
Sounds like one of your solenoid in the valve body is bad, if you.are able to shift it.by yourself, then it could be a.solenoid, but also.check your transmission fluid to make sure its full, check when transmission fluid is hot, either in park or neutral, your owners manual will tell you which.way to check it, sometimes on the.dipstick it will say how to.check it to.
