I have a 2005 Sportsman 700 EFI 1200 miles that has a growling or grinding sound that seems to be coming from the rear part of the machine, I hear it mostly at low speeds. When I speed it seems to go away. I jacked it up and had all four wheels turning but the engine noise drowns out the noise and I can't hear it then. The rear prop shaft is a little loose on the rear end spline. There seems like excessive backlash in the shaft that goes to the transmission from the rear and I hear a clanking sound in the transmission when I rotate the tire back and forth. That could be the drive chain in the transmission. I changed the outer boot on the left rear cv joint recently and that assembly seemed tight and ok. Could it be in the clutching, or bad belt. Any ideas would be welcome.

check the fuses and also could be a relay on your tranny
SOURCE: polaris 500 sportsman awd not working
the usual problem with those is either the switch itself or the magnetic hubs at the front wheels
The factory service manual will tell you how to check both

Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together.
the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was.

I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so
that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift
assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear
near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When
the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold
it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions.
This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the
rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it
should now be able to shift out of reverse.
