My 2005 polaris Sportsman 500 does this in the winter when plowing, but only sometimes when pushing the override button to go backwards in 4x4. A friend told be to check the differential fluid levels in the rear for my machine. Have not done this yet.

sounds like u need to change your hub fluids and or clean the meatal rings in the hubs so the electro magnets will engage your hubs efficiantly

Suggest that you locate the charcoal canister that absorbs gas fumes from the tank (located in the engine compartment). Follow each of the 2 hoses that are connected to it. I suspect that you will find a crack in one of the hoses. You can replace the hose or splice a piece into it at the crack.
