SOURCE: won't idle steadily

Check the rubber boot that joins the carby to the engine to often have seen the hose clamps over tightened therefore creating a split in the rubber letting to much air in giving the rough idle eventually you wont be able to start it at all (have a good thorough look inside an outside of boot doesnt take much)

SOURCE: just redone the top end of my 91 250 timberwolf atv 4x2

take the spark plug out, take valve tappet covers off - you may as well check valve clearance while you're there - on the bear trackers a little older - the lever for forward or reverse - the large screw facing the back of the bike of the three - take that out - and you can see the timing mark on the flywheel. take the pull start off. move the motor counter clockwise very slowly with that large screw that holds the selector lever handle down off - look down that large hold until you see a T I the TDC is when that line just past the T is centered in the hole. Now - for the chaiin - take the chain tensioner out - ((check it by turning the inside with a screwdriver and getting it to go back in - two bolts on either side (8mm) with a 12mm in the middle. 8's hold it in - 12 keeps pressure on the tensioner. they're not adjustable - but once the 12mm bolt is out of the middle - you can use a flathead small screwdriver to turn left and right and get tensioner to compress. If you have to take chain off due to it not being lined up TIE A METAL WIRE AROUND THE CHAIN BEFORE TAKING OFF THE SPROCKET - IF IT FALLS INTO THE CRANKCASE WITH NOTHING ON THERE = YOU CAN'T GET IT BACK OUT WITH TAKING THE CASE APART. Now - on the camshaft sprocket - there is a mark on the sprocket and one on the housing at like the 12 oclock mark. When that mark on the flywheel is at tdc TI , the mark on the camshaft should line up on the housing. Make a few goes around to make sure that timing chain makes it all the way back around to that mark. You'll actually make a rotation or two on the flywheel before that chain has made it all the way back to that mark.
those two are lined up at the same time and you're good to go. The valve clearance is imperative and this is the best time to do it. Intake clearance is .002 - .004 on later bear trackers and exhaust side is .004-.006" on later models as well.

My 1997 yamaha timberwolf 250

The cold weather may cause your Yamaha Timberwolf to experience hard starting, several months and no use, or a stale fuel supply. Start by replacing the spark plug, if the engine still does not fire up, clean the carburetor and make sure all the hoses are connected tightly with no air leaks. If none of these strategies work, the carburetor may need to be adjusted or replaced. You may want to take it to an experienced mechanic if you are unable to get the engine started.

Fuel tank removal and clean 1997 250 Yamaha Timberwolf atv how to

Cleaning the inside of a fuel tank is more time consuming than difficult but the big problem is because the tank is vented to a sometimes damp atmosphere, the more it is cleaned the quicker new rust will form unless it is treated or sealed. Below is a link to a UK supplier to provide an example of the sort of thing...

https://www.frost.co.uk/por15-car-bike-motorcyle-fuel-tank-repair-sealer-236ml.html

Begin with putting a pint of paraffin or kerosene in the tank and adding a pound of mixed hardware; nails, screws, washers, nuts and bolts and shaking for as long as it needs to remove the majority of the rust and dirt. Gravel chippings is an alternative.

Once you are satisfied the tank is fairly clean inside, empty, rinse a few times and then wash out with water and detergent. Dry thoroughly.
Remaining rust can be removed by using many different mild acids and the internet is full of ideas using substances as diverse as lemon juice, vinegar, tannic acid, phosphoric acid...

After soaking in the substance of your choice the tank will need washing and drying again before use or treating against future corrosion.

Yamaha Timberwolf. How can I find model number to order parts

If you can tell me your vin - or your year I can tell you what model you have. But - if you go onto any parts site - such as cheapcycle.com or partsmonster - you name it - you won't need your 'model' # - just your year. You'd click - Yamaha OEM Parts, then ATV then Year - 1992 - 1998 was the Timberwolf - a lot of parts from the 99 - 04 Bear Tracker will work (just about only changed the plastics and carb in 99 - 04) same engine/transmission/rear end, etc. the brakes also went from drum to disc - but you'd click on the year - and then look - the timberwolf will be right there the 1992 - 1998 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 - I can't remember if they offered a timberwolf 350. If you can tell me the vin or year - like I said - I'll reply with your exact model # - but you can buy and order most parts just by model name and year 95 Timberwolf.
