You might have a broken shift dog. try disconnecting the shift linkages and turning them with pliers first to see if shifter is out of adjustment first.

It does not have a drain plug. You have to loosen the bolts that hold the drain pan and let the fluid drain out that way.

I also have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 v8 magnum 4x4. Idk what this is. But it bogs down going up heel and the shifting gears seems bad. It gets up to about 55-60 mph and stays, unless going down heel then it gets faster. And going up heel it gets slower. Any solutions or same problems?! Need help...
