It could be something clogged up and it is running out of fuel,i would check fuel lines, carburetor, etc. does it start right back up?if not, give it a few minutes to let fuel fill up carburetor, then try starting.if it starts back up after letting it sit a few ,sounds like fuel starvation to carburetor.
If it starts under " choke" but won't stay running it's likely the inlet needle and jet that needs to be cleared

Need to clean that carb thoroughly. Clean or replace air filter, check gas tank vent on cap, make sure you have a good fuel stream coming out of the fuel petcock. The old gas could have clogged the petcock filter. In the picture you can see the arrows pointing to the reserve and the main. This is where the fuel comes in and it is a very fine "plastic screen mesh". This can become clogged. The one pictured us from a cat.
Testimonial: "Where is the petcock filter?"
Check the timing. Sounds like it's off.

Sounds like a blocked main jet in the carby.
Need more detailed description of the symptoms for a better answer.
