Question about Yamaha 2004 Blaster Base

1 Answer

I just bought a 1998 yamaha blaster atv. How much and what kind of oil goes in the gearbox? (the guy i got it from said use plain old 10w-30 oil) Does it use heavy weight gear oil? Transmission fluid? Engine oil? And how much does it hold? One other question.... Is there a breather on the gear box that could leak if it's overfilled?

Use heavy duty SAE 80W-90 gear oil

Engine oil does work but the oil will not last as long nor will it protect the bearing's/gear's as well as gear oil. Thick dif oil can work to.
Also the gear box is should be sealed.

There are many good synthetic oils for bikes, generally the more it costs the better it is.
10w30 seems ok but will depend on your location and tempurature,
Your manual has a page on oil and recommended weights

SOURCE: can I use regular

You can use synthetics if you like to gamble, but I advise against it. Synthetic oils often cause the cork on the clutch friction plates to either shrink or swell. If they shrink, the clutch will fail to grab and the bike just sits there. If the cork swells, the clutch will grab and want to pull the bike forward even with the clutch lever all the way in. Just use good old 10w40 motor oil without additives. Please rate my answer. Thanks!

SOURCE: oil leaking from clutch push lever

Sounds like a worn seal. If you remove the cover and knock out the seal any atv dealer should be able to replace it.

Sounds like you need a rebuild. Dont use cheap china parts, go online to http://www.amazon.com/Wiseco-PK1089-2-Stroke-Piston-Top-End/dp/B0050FYN4Y/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420937950&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=yamaha+blaster+wise+co And get this. This should be everything you need to rebuild it. Now you need to MIX your oil. Not use the tank. Google blaster oil tank bypass and just remove the tank as it can tear up the engine badly. The oil pump can send shards of plastic into the crank and cause it to fail. Once you have done this, You can have the engine built, mix the oil 32:1 and insert into the gas tank. After this is all complete it should all be running even smoother then before. For any other help go to www.Blasterforum.com
