the car needs service, (CEL /SED lamp glows ) means that.
so get it serviced or learn to do that and buy the service manual to learn. tests.
tick over = idling. sure.
my guess it needs fuel and filters. (they are clogged)
2.0L diesel engine it is.

a very expensive car!, so never serviced it?
You will need a compatible with Mercedes OBDII code reader to scan the car for any error codes.
If you can afford it, purchase one and it will pay off for itself after couple uses since dealer's diagnostic charge is $150-$200 in US.
Or you could go to official Mercedes shop and they will reset it for you.

Waiting for oil to drain from the upper engine to the bottom oil pan. It is all explained on the forums and in the attached video.
I have exactly the same problem with my MB E290TD. The same DTC, also changed MAF, also need to torn of the engine for 5-10 sec to get the engine running well. And I checked all vacums - they are all good.Also I have changed egr transducers (both of them) for two times, didnt helped.Cleaned and checked for holding vacum EGR, good - didnt helped.It seems like a mechanical problem that affects the electronic seestem - but i can not figure out what ir is.The strange thing is that you can tur engine on in the morning and it can imediatly cach the foult. But there are days that you can drive all dai long and the car will run fine. That pises me off. Because I have done everything that can be done - but NO ONE can tell the exact explonation of the P1403 (exhaust gas recirculation - HFM-regulation). Every explonation is a quess.?
The oil plug is located on the oil pan. If i remember correctly, on the M111 engine, it should be on the driver side at the lowest point on the side. You may have to remove a lower shield or belly pan to see it. They are usually 8mm bolts. I use an oil extractor or evaluator so I don't touch the drain plugs. I hope this helps.
Starter motor on this car is imposible to get to..better find the post forward of the drivers side fuse box in the engine compartment where a bunch of wires come together. This is a positive terminal attach red jumper here put the negative jumper on any bare metal bracket of the engine

Map sensor problems are more common on certain models. As far as engine computer sensor reliability this is one of the sensors that appear to be more reliable overall. But on a few models poor mounting location chosen by the factory may reduce its reliability.You can use BMW scanner to check the problem
