I had the exact same problem with my 2003 Galant. The above solutions may be correct but try some other things first. 1) start car and with engine idling turn on the AC. If the rpm's drop and don't come back up or the car dies, it is probably a dirty max air flow sensor. This is an easy fix even for a novice. Many you tube videos to show you how to clean. 2)check spark plug wires and boots. Cheap solution and a likely culprit. 3)Is your service engine soon light on? Could be an emissions problem. If you are able to drive the vehicle and notice that even at highway speeds you slow down with pressure on the accelerator you may have to replace something in secondary emissions control. Not likely. If it is a vac. hose leak you should be able to hear it and locate it with your hood up and engine running.

Only on a Ford & only in case of an accident Fuel Safety Shut Off Switch is either open or closed Knowing that & the fact you had no accident to open it, you move on & check fuel pressure

remove your rear wheel then remove the brake assembly. there are 4 bolts that hold the hub to the rear axel with anti lock brakes you will have a wire to remove from the hub. it may tak a large hammer and chisel to remove the hub. but it will come off. then reinstall (if there is any shims behind the hub they must be put back in in the same directions (these are alignment shims) some have some dont. tighten bolts and test drive the ca 5 miles or so. then retighten the lug bolts. and then again after 100 miles.

Use a bottle of yellow HEET dry gas to remove any moisture problem in the fuel. Clean / replace air filter. Top off ATF to MAX level. Use starting fluid to aid starting.

over filling the oil in transmission is just as bad as no oil. Drain to correct oil levels.

Sounds like your gear box or clutch is going. Might need to get it looked at, yes it can effect certain gears only.
