you have to disengage the automatic timing advance by unpluging a little plug coming off the high tension pack and you put a wire in both sides to ground it out to stop auto timing advance then with the rpm at 900 you check your timing with a timing light connected to #1 spark plug wire
I put heads on a 89 MIT montero and times but
I just did it, the distributor is two teeth back under #2 on the distributor cap!I do not know why I just know it is, and I verified it at a local junk yard on two Montero's .The
three timing mark's must all match at their marks at the same time, if
you have the car together then the white mark on your harmonic balancer
should be at the mark on your timing cover at the bottom area of your
engine

When you took it apart did you "match mark" the joints so that it went back together the same? If not then your driveshaft is probably out of balance. Any driveline shop can correct this. By match marking I mean that you make a mark on each piece of the driveshaft so that when you put it back together the pieces are in the same position relative to each other. If one piece got put back 180 degrees out, it can cause the whole shaft to become unbalanced.
