Engine turns over but will not start. sometimes it chugs, or acts like it is dieseling. when it does start it runs fine.
Without seeing it and witnessing the problem or being able to look at an ECU diagnostic code, my first thought and this is only a guess, would be to suspect water in the fuel line or somehow getting into the combustion chamber. Has the engine ever overheated on you? If it has, then one possibility would be a blown head gasket, but if so then I would also suspect and look for additional symptoms, such as the engine oil appearing milky-looking or looking at the radiator fluid/engine coolant and seeing droplets of oil floating on the water. Are you periodically having to add either oil or water but otherwise see no apparent leaks? Either symptom is indicative of a blown head gasket (or a cracked cylinder head) and both symptoms equate to a major repair expense (over $1000). I would first check for water in the fuel line and if that can be 100% ruled out then I would pull all the spark plugs out and run a compression check on each cylinder. How many miles are on it? Per your owner's manual the car was due to have the spark plugs replaced at 90,000 miles. Was this done? (If you bought it used with over 90k on it, it's pretty safe to assume that the plugs were not changed). Sorry I can't be more specific, but your problem could be due to several possibilities, Hopefully you know an honest mechanic who can help you. (avoid the ones who advertise). Good luck!
Heater will not blow hot air
First of all the engine has to be running (and warmed up) - On a cold morning this could take several minutes.
Secondly, after allowing for the engine to warm up and with the knob turned to heat and the blower turned on, place your hand over other vents in the car, such as the air conditioning vent and the defroster vent. Still no heat??
Possible problem: Check the radiator to make sure you're not low on water (coolant). If the coolant level is OK, the most likely problem would be that your thermostat may be stuck open (very common). In most cars the thermostat is (usually) located under (inside) the water inlet somewhere on top of the motor, where the upper radiator hose connects to the top of the engine, You will need tools (a socket wrench & possibly a screwdriver) to access this. In putting it back together you are also likely to need a new thermostat gasket and possibly some gasket sealer. The counterperson at your local auto parts store can likely give you some additional pointers on this & perhaps even recommend someone who can do it for you cheap.
Another possible problem (if you bought the car used from someone) is that the heater core may have gone bad and developed a leak, Rather than fix it, a previous owner may have disconnected the heater hose (under the hood) and bypassed it. - this is not likely, but just something else to check. If this turns out to be the problem, have your checkbook ready...
Hope this helps.
