Most likely cause - thermostat has failed and is stuck shut.
Other possible causes include foreign material in the air fins obstructing air flow, or silicate or hard water deposits inside obstructing water flow, or air in the cooling system. Air gets in when you change the coolant, or when the plastic water reservoir starts to crumble and leak internally.
Also, BMW used a plastic impeller water pump off-and-on in the three series through the years. Those plastic pump impellers get old and crumble eventually.
WHERE IS THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT ON A 1999 BMW
Right side of the trunk, beneath the plastic tray.
The correct battery size (group) for this car is not carried by most vendors, and if you find one, it may have been sitting on the shelf for a long time getting 'stale'. You will find that your battery compartment can hold the next size larger battery, or either of a couple of smaller sized batteries. Using a more common size will save you money and will probably get you a fresher battery. Just make sure that the poles are oriented correctly and the battery is not too tall for the compartment. If it is shorter than the original, you may need to use a spacer made of plastic or wood beneath the battery clamp to secure it in place.
It does not take a lot of cold cranking amps to start a 325, but you don't want to use a really low capacity $50 battery because the computers on that car require a very smooth steady voltage. A cheap or failing battery can cause all kinds of quirky electrical problems with the computers. Even if you go to WalMart, plan on spending $100 or more on a battery.
