1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Questions & Answers
My sons 88 Mighty max runs terrible at about 35 mph and up. Seems to run betterhe air temp is cooler, like 60's and lower. We replaced plugs/wires, cap/rotor, fuel pump, air/fuel filters, some que
Air is more dense at lower temperatures so the cylinders fill better and there is some evidence increased humidity also helps engines to run better.
Replacing stuff in the vague hope it will provide a cure can be expensive and very frustrating and is no substitute for proper checks and replacing only what proves to be faulty.
New plugs won't improve matters if the spark is really weak and a new fuel pump is really money down the drain if the pressure regulator is faulty or the injectors aren't spraying properly or the carb has some blocked jets or if the oxygen sensor is sending the wrong information...
It is best practice to always start with the basics - engine condition, timing, compressions, cylinder leakage and so forth. Your description indicates the engine is short of fuel or fuel that it can use but could equally be caused by a restricted exhaust. I once had a car just like that and it was a worn exhaust cam lobe that was causing the trouble.
My 1988 Mighty Max is smoking from the exhaust. ..
Does the smoke go away soon after starting? If so then your valve stem seals are worn out. If it smokes all the time then the piston rings are worn. Oil fouled spark plugs will cause starting problems.

all old cars this old have many engines. which do you have.
is it carb engine or EFI .???????
if carb, follow it fuel line to the filter. is that hard?
if EFI, follow the pressure line from fuel rail to the filter. same deal.
there is a return line, dont follow that.
Bogs down with little acceleration
run fault codes and look for accelerator position sensor and MAF/MAP problems. Have a pressure test done on the fuel manifold to check for pump, pressure regulator and filter problems.
I have a 1988 mighty max that I bought with a rod
I found this on another website on about adjusting the carb, not sure if this is the cause without knowing more information but give it a shot. should only take you about 10 minutes. "set the lever on the second highest step of the fast idle cam. measure the primary valve to throttle bore clearance, manual trans .031 inch automatic trans .035 inch, if its off, adjust it with the fast idle adjusting screw if you turn the screw clockwise the fast idle rpm increases,if you turn the screw counterclockwise the fast idle rpm decreases." You also may want to recheck the timing to make sure its exact.
