indications are a failed flex plate that the torque converter is attached to the starter drives on that plate to turn the engine over

Found this wiring diagram. Voltage for the coil comes from ignition switch, the ignition power transistor/ignition module controls the ground for the coil. My info says you crank and cam position sensors are built into the distributor. Sorry, I know very little about a Mitsubishi, I can't help you diagnose.

POSSIBLE OVERDRIVE SOL, NOT ENGAGE

It is under the dash just under the radio. You have to take out the center counsel to get to it.

burned valve is likely the culprit.... or bad rings.... hook air up to that cyclinder one at a time.... and listen where the air is escaping... be aware that the motor will rotate till the piston is at the bottom of it's rotation. if it's a burned valve you will have to remove the head and replace it but somewhat easier job then replacing the rings. darn almost forgot.... it can also be a blown head gasket.... same procedure but you might need a brush and some soap water to test for an air leak at the side of the head. when you are done spray some wd 40 on it to get the water off so the spark plugs do not arc.

check you thermostat because it maybe stick on open so your engine is running cold and cant reach the required temp.

The noise is probably coming from the lifters. Check your oil level and change it if it's dirty.

Best thing to do is to look up on craigslist for someone parting out your make/model....super cheap and if that doesn't work, check out ebay.....have you checked your local junkyard?
