What is communication line shutdown due to over current protection on VE line?
Something is allowing too much current on the VE line, which could potentially melt wires or burn out electronic components. The computer is protecting this system by turning it off.
Whatever is going on, you will need to take it to a professional to have it diagnosed. It is most definitely not a do-it-yourself kind of problem.
Why won't my 2001 Alero (2.4) start?
The most likely causes on the Alero are either a clogged fuel filter (which should be replaced every 30,000 miles in order to avoid damage to the fuel pump), or a weak or bad fuel pump. I'd start with replacing the fuel pump since it's the cheapest fix, the part costs about $20 at the Auto Parts Store. Here's a link to the fuel filter location and replacement:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_the_fuel_filter_located_and_how_do_you_replace_it_on_a_2001_Oldsmobile_Alero
The fuel pump replacement is more work and more money. The part costs between $100 and $150 to buy nif your a DIY, or about $650 for parts & labor at a repair shop. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank, so the gas tank will need to be dropped if the pump is to be replaced.
Gas cap stuck won't come off?
Grab a pair of channel locks to get a good grip on the cap and twist counter clockwise. The back pressure created in the tank from the gas depleting can make the cap seem impossible to remove.
How far can i drive when my 2001 alero is overheates
The more you drive it during the overheating the more damage you will do to the car. Running out of gas wil not cause overheating. Wrong type of antifreeze/coolant will not cause it to overheat either. Wrong coolant/antifreeze may cause corrosion over time to some engines. When you notice it getting hot, stop as soon as you can safely. You may have a problem with the thermostat, coolant leak, bad head gasket, bad water pump, bad fan or fan relay or fan thermal switch, clogged radiator, leaky radiator. I would have to know more about the syptoms to give more insight.
Why can't my 2001 Alero (2.4) not start?
It sounds like you have air in the fuel injection rail, rather common after disconnecting and removing them during the head gasket replacement process. With the ignition key on so the fuel pump is running, bleed the air from the nipple on the end of the rail. Do so by placing a rag over it, pressing the center pin through the rag to release the air until you feel the wetness of the gas coming out instead of air. Both should be coming out under significant pressure, unless your fuel pump is faulty (or the ground wire to the fuel pump is frayed where it passes over the top of the transmission).
