1996 Buick Skylark Questions & Answers
What controls the radiator fan on a 1996 Skylark?
electric fans are controlled through the ECM by a coolant sensor in the lock
when it registers water temp at a preset temp setting , it reports to the ECM which then activates a relay and the fans run
the set temp is close to the opening temp of the thermostat
there are 2 fuses in the circuit so check them if the fan /s is not working automatically
Runs but won't stay running. I put a new fuel pump in it
Not really enough info to go with here but here are a few suggestions:
1. Check battery and alternator. If battery voltage is too low the ignition system may be kicking off.
2. Check for obstructions in the intake and tail pipe. Make sure air path is clear.
3. If the above 2 items check out there may be an issue with some intake side sensors or air control valves. I can't say for sure on the skylark but other Buick vehicles I have worked on use an idle air control valve that can get stuck over time and it will cause all kind of erratic behavior at idle.
Hope this helps...
How to remove the instrument cluster
There is plastic decorative trim that surrounds the cluster, it runs from side to side. Open both doors and on the passanger side you will see a screw holding that end, the drivers side does not have a screw. You need a "L" shaped pry tool.and a flat blade screwdriver, using the tools, start at the outer edge and slowly pry the plastic trim out... it is held in place with spring clips.
carefuly work your way toward the cluster... then do the same thing from the other end. when you got all the spring clips loose, that plastic will lift off and you will see the screws holding the IP in place.
After changing my sparkplugs my car doesnt want to
You may need to find out what type of plug your car requires. Certain cars need the factory type plug back in them. If you went with a chep version then your car may not perform as well. I think yours takes the fine tipped type of ac delco brand plugs. Start there.
What is ets off on a car l have a 1996 Skylark
The actual cause may vary. If I remember correctly a bad oil pressure switch might cause the ets to turn off. Or it might be a defective oil pump. Either way, you will need a qualified technician troubleshoot the cause.
My Buick Skylark starts and dies immediately. Won't stay running
It almost sounds as if the vehicles theft deterrent system is shutting down. Is your vehicle equipped with a theft deterrent system ? If so there's several things that could be wrong or it could be as simple as doing what's called a relearn for that system. Attempt to restart it, once it starts then dies leave the ignition switch in the run position, if equipped with a theft system ( check your owners manual) there will be a light in the instrument panel that will begin flashing , while leaving the ignition switch in the run position wait for about 10 minutes, the light SHOULD stop flashing. Turn the ignition switch to the off position and attempt to start it. If it still bothers you're either dealing with something deeper or different type of a problem. Good luck.
How do you know if your spark plugs are the problem?
bad spark plug or bad wire will cause one cylinder not fire cause engine to surge.but change spark plugs and wires, if engine still surge have fuel filter changed, check fuel pressure weak fuel pump will cause engine surge.if you see check engine light flashing code scan for faulty TPS SENSOR OR FAULTY FUEL INJECTOR OR BAD IGNITION COIL.FAULT IN THE PCM.
Power windows go down part way and start clicking without moving
I had the same thing with my driver side window. I took the door panel off and did not see any physical damge. But if I ran my hand along the regulator track, I would feel the cable had started to fray and come apart. The clicking was the cable within the spool that winds up as you use the window rubbing against the plastic. My van is a 2000 and I was able to find a .pdf of the Dealer repair manual online, only one page talks about the regulators and shows for a manual setup. But it made the mounting screw locations easier to find. Go to you-tube and type in your car make and year with something like, "how to replace a window regulator". I was lucky enough to find one for my van. In my case, the space you are working with is extremely tight, but I was able to get it all back together and it works great. I just fixed it yesterday, BTW, just wanted to pass on the good fortune.

Corner light
If no screws are visible from the exterior then the mount for the corner light is acsesed from the under the hood.
