Wont crank over, but its not the starter
I'm assuming you've had the battery checked and it is fully charged and functional. Check both battery cable ends to be sure they are clean and tight and also check them with an ohm meter to be sure there is no corrosion inside the cable insulation. Also have the alternator checked to be sure it is charging the battery. You also may have a bad starter solenoid.
Remove water pump
the water pump is on tge left side motor you have to remove motor ***** make sure you jack engine up from under neath your gonna see make sure to take alternator off
Where is the timing located in a 96 nissan altima
the timing marks are on the camshaft sprockets and also on the timing chain there should be three silver markings ,those markings go alighn with the markings on sprocket also remember to put #1 piston top dead center
I have 96 nissan altima, it star but when i turn
this is normally refered to as "dieseling" try a tune up (cap,rotor,plugs,wires) be careful not to strip the screws in the cap when removing, they are not easy to replace in this vehicle.
however if the vehicle continues to run perfectly fine for longer than 1 minute after you removed the key, you may have a bad ignition ground, a chiltons manual will show you the way to repairs.
RPM JUMPING
I`d suggest you have a problem with the cable which goes between your rev counter, and your engine, check that out first, look for wear on both ends of the cable

i assume you mean ignition timing?disconnect both connectors on throotle position switch.This puts system in base timing mode.now timing can be set.when done simply reconnect tps connectors.
I have a situation were
well it sounds like your car is starting out in 4th gear which is overdrive,thats quite the load on the engine.knock sensor is what it says its a sensor.it is designed to sense knock on heavy accel..it is suppose to ****** your timing to stop knock. your mechanic is on the right track to say it is poss. the transmission.
How to uninstall transmission filter on a 96
Locate transmission pan ,it has a drain bold in the middle of it . drain the fluid (the fluid should be redish in color )from the transmission and then remove the bolts that hold the pan on .when you remove that pan you will see the filter.It has atleast 2 bolts that hold it on , remove those bolts.MAKE SURE YOU ARE AT THE TRANSMISSION PAN-NOT THE OIL PAN
I replaced the alternator and battery, but the
check for loose altenator belt. also check fluid level in the brake master cylinder. you can have the battery checked for free at any autozone or advance auto parts store. they can also check for bad altenator. don't be mislead by someone who is only out for money! have them checked please. the altenator belt only may be needed tightened! do not be a victim. have it checked for free. hope this helps and if you need further assistance please repost your question to fixya.com
