I had a 1990 Ford Laser which had a similar problem and would die at the worst possible time. After taking it to different mechanical outlets where they replaced fuses, ignition, I took vehicle to an auto electrician and what was causing the problem was the after sales immobilizer was arching and partially melted every now and then it would cut power to vehicle. Newer vehicles has this hooked into the ignition now. so if you have an ex factory immobilizer it may pay to check this?

I have a 97 chevy

Your vehicle uses electronically controlled blend doors to direct th air flow from defrost to vent and to the floor . If the door motor is bad then it will stay at a fixed position so you will not get the air to flow out the defrost ducts. There are at least two of these one for air blend and one for fresh air. They are located on the passenger side usually under the plastic cover and have a wire harness that plug in and are usually shaped like a piece of pie.

My truck has been hard

You will probably find this problem intermittent.
Check connection and security of the Main Power cable between the Battery and the Starter Motor,
a Good Ground on the stater motor, and the same on the Starter Solenoid connection wire that originates on the Key start and runs thro' the Starter Relay in the Main Fuse/Power contol box.
After doing all of this the problem still persists, Take off the Starter Motor and have it tested at Autozone, or Checker Auto, FOC, and they will advise.
If Starter has reached its sell by date, then you only have to install the new Warrantied unit.
Regards,David

How to change ignition barrel

You have to remove the Airbag, so take the negative lead off the truck battery. Remove the airbag. remove the steering wheel. You will need a steering wheel puller or some good luck in getting it off without one. Under the steering wheel you will have a retaining plate. It has a spring clip around the center shaft that has to be removed. not real easy. it has a big spring behind the plate you'll have to contend with. Once you get the clip off, remove the plate. You'll have to remove the screws holding the turn signal stalk in place. Remove the screw holding the ignition cylinder in place. The whole thing should slide out now.
