1996 GMC Sierra - Page 8 Questions & Answers
Truck stalled wouldn't start.
I can understand you being frustrated. There really is no way to tell if the fuel pump was the problem at this point. If the security system fails, you should see "security" light up on the cluster. The key lock has a sensor that reads the chip in the key. If the sensor fails or the chip fails the computer won't let the vehicle start. Most of the time when the security system is at fault, the vehicle won't start, but it won't cause the engine to stall. You might want to have someone check the fuel pressure and spark at the plugs if you don't see the security light on the cluster.Could be the fuel pump relay and a list of other things.I would probably check the computer for trouble codes too.

When was the last time the van was tuned-up? Cap/rotor/plugs/wires? is it a distributer ignition system? how many miles are on the truck? And We have had alot of problems with most caps/rotors until we switched to delco-remy cap/rotor. they are a little more expensive but seem to last and not have to replace them yearly lol. And have you removed the screens that are supppose to allow condensation to escape the cap/rotor? they clog up and cause problems.they are located underneath/on the bottom of the distributer, u can use a small pick or screwdriver to remove it/them.it's not always easy. i can't remember if there were one or two screens on that year/model. But with the random misfire it is generally the cap/rotor, so i would start there. Make sure to Label the wires, cap before removing so you do NOT get wires crossed. Also be careful not to over tighten the bolts holding down the cap because they strip out easily. if they are stripped, try using teflon tape on the screw(s) to help grab the thread. Otherwise you will probably end up having to use a small machine screw with a nut to hold the cap down, it sucks to do it this way.
Replacing a starter
the starter on your sierra is located on the passenger side at the rear of the engine it will have two bolts going straight up side by side into the engine
1996 1500 Silverado V6 4.3 gas mileage.
for better freeway mileage a low back pressure exhaust will help, also run tires at max pressure, this is around 45 PSI, in town there is little you can do.
