1991 Volkswagen Jetta - Page 7 Questions & Answers
How do you replace the driver's side door handle on a 1991 vw?
on this car there should be a black strip cover on the inside of door handle. take small screw driver and remove it starting from near lock cylinder, pry very gently and cover should come off, then gently peel the cover towards the front of the car until it is off. phillips screw is located in the rear of the door and at the front of the handle.
1991 vw jetta will not start
there is sensor in distributor called hall sensor ,this generates the pulse for your spark.this is probably faulty.
What does the symbol look like for a radio
not sure what the "symbol" looks like but..
It should be a 25 AMP Fuse #43, if I'm not mistaken. Also, I believe there is a fuse directly plugged into the rear of the radio as well.
Just make sure you have your radio code handy in order to restart it.

91 Jetta starts hard and occasionally stalls out
Sounds like your alternator is starting to seize up. Remove the belt and spin the pulley by hand. If you hear a light grinding sound or the pulley is stiff then the alternators bearings are worn. Take the alternator to an electrical repair shop for rebuilding. I usually pay around $50 as opposed to $100 or more from a parts store. Look up auto electrical repair in your Yellow pages. Older VW's are known for starter and alternator failures so finding a cheaper source for parts should help you save some money.
What size tires do I need?
The GL model came with two different tire sizes:
185/60R14 or 195/60R14, the GLX came with 205/50/R15. There should be a sticker on one of the door jams that will tell you what came on your new.
NOX SENOR
I have yet to see a car with a Nitrogen Oxides(NOx) sensor on it. However I have seen Oxygen (O2) sensors. The O2 sensor monitors the remaining amount of oxygen left in your exhaust, and tells your Engine Control Unit(ECU) how much fuel to use. The sensor looks much like a stainless steel spark plug and is found in the exhaust system. Your car being a 1991 it should only have one. It will be up stream of the Catlytic converter, maybe in the Exhaust manifold. cost between 50 and 150$us.
91 vw jetta 1.6l diesel belts
These engines are identified as an interference engine and on no account must the crank shaft and cam shaft be moved with the timing belt removed. You no not need to remove the water pump. You need to remove the water pump pulley only (not the water pump). I trust this helps.

Rusted through Oil pipe
Try a VW car and van Breaker. You may need to take the pipe of the breakers car, so take some tools with you. You could try a motor factors other than VW. Hope that helps you.
Cruise control problems
I would agree the switch is the first thing to replace, it is also the cheapest part and a logical choice based on your description of the problem
