Gear oil leaking from rear of drive shaft
You need to replace the seal for the pinion. ou need to remove the drive shaft off the pinion yoke thene you will find a big nut in the center of the yoke that has to be removed but before you remove the nut check to see if there is any kind of play on the yoke if there is play the pinion bearing will have to be replaced if that is the case your better off having a mechanic do the job. If there is no play remove the nut pull the yoke off replace the seal and reinstall in reverse order.
1996 Gmc runs rough after it warms up
With mine it was vacuum/electric. That is the beauty (sarcasm) of this year~ Check your grounds and get to know your vacuum diagram and never let people under the hood...one hose off a random component and everything goes bad. Easily fix once you know the vacuum.
No dash lights or guages
check fuses first port of call.Test with test light, ign on, should have light at both sides of fuse. one side only replace fuse

I have a 1986 fully size jimmy with a 305. I need
Your truck has no ECU (computer) it has a (ESC)-electronict spark control. this has the ability to change the ability to change the ignition timing under any and all operating conditions. Data from various remote sensors (coolant temperature, throttle position, rpm, ect.) is transmitted to the ESC. The ESC computes the information and triggers the ignition spark at precisely the right instant.
hope this helps...
86 350 FI RUNS COLD REPLACED THERMO TWICE BLOCKED
Check any bypass hoses that are around the engine for blockage or internal swelling. If the bypass hoses are restricted, warmup time will be extended. Even though the thermostat is new, the valve may still not be seating properly when closed and allowing some flow when engine is still cold and slowing warmup. Check by shining torch at thermostat valve seat to see if there any gaps. Most thermostats also have a little tickle valve in the outside rim, that is held closed by the water pump pressure but allow a trickle flow when engine is stopped for cool down. If this valve is missing or sticking, that will also slow the warmup process.
My full size gmc jimmy with 305 is very sluggish
If it's been well maintained as in tune-ups etc, and considering the year, and thinking pretty high mileage, I wouldn't rule out a plugged exhaust, such as catalytic converter. Pretty easy to test and see what results you get. They used to sell what they called,"test pipes" for this problem, which was basically a piece of exhaust pipe that allowed you to remove converter and install it in it's place to test it. Problem was, everybody just left the test pipe in if it was the cure, thus not helping the environment, so they're no longer available, except maybe from a custom exhaust place. Other signs of plugged exhaust include, engine running hotter than normal, poor fuel mileage. If it is plugged, don't let it go, can also cause head gasket problems, so make sure coolant isn't going down as well.
Where can I get a free fuse box diagram for a 1986
Usually they are in the owner's manual, but it sounds like you don't have one?If you call a GMC dealer, they would probably provide you with a free one,or at least very low cost, usually free though because they can just copy it from software. That's the only trucks my cousin buys too,Jimmys.
Good luck! Greg
4 wheel drive will not engage
A frequent problem with these trucks is the vacuum switch on the transfer case.It is a three port switch screwed in above where the shift lever comes out of the t/case.The switch just screws in,7/8 wrench if I remember correctly. When you remove the vacuum hose connector from the switch, you should hear a vacuum noise for a few seconds. If you don't check for a defective vacuum check valve near the firewall behind the engine,or a cracked vacuum resevoir. One other area to inspect is below the battery. Sometimes battery acid will leak onto the vacuum hose that goes to the actuator causing a leak in the hose, which will disable the four wheel drive. To check for a broken actuator cable, jack a front wheel, put your t/case in 4wd, move the diaphragm manually you should feel the axle lock in...the front tire should not turn by hand
