Because the engine has an over-rich condition that is causing liquid fuel to pass completely thru the engine and get pumped out the exhaust. This is an extremely dangerous condition for many reasons. 1 - leaking fuel in a usually hot exhaust system can ignite, explode its fumes under the vehicle, or subject passengers to hydrocarbon fumes, 2 - if enough fuel is in the exhaust to leak oiut a muffler...and it came thru the engine, there is a distinct possibility of internal engine damage occurring at any time. The pistons normally compress a mixture that is more than 85% air. Air is compressible (meaning you can make it physically smaller by squeezing it at great pressure). Liquids by their nature ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT COMPRESSIBLE!! What this means is if you have a leaking fuel pressure regulator (kinda common on older ones) or leaking/stuck injectors (less common but still happens) or simply a defective fuel control system that is commanding ridiculous amounts of fuel (rare!), if it exceeds the compressible space in the cylinder for incompressible fuel volume,,,something will break or bend and quite possibly destroy the engine. 3 - if you have enough gas to flow liquid out the exhaust, you are at the very least damaging the catalytic converter which can run hundreds to even a couple of thousand dollars to replace. Further, your mileage is AWFUL right now because despite what people think, cars run on very small volumes of fuel. as in an eyedropperfull per rpm. Now imagine 100x normal fuel useage. Thats probably what you have to have it leak out a muffler. Think prevention, in addition to destroying the engine, it kills mileage, performance, detsroys cats and O2s, rings, seals, valves, sometymes purge systems or pcv systems. It should be repaired asap to prevent more costs si\oon.

check start system properly

Check the front brake rotor. When the brake pads wear down too far they will make a grinding noise. I am not sure what sound the axle makes when they begin to wear out. I would check the boot that covers the axle joint for any damage.

Yes - the fast flashing is a warning that a bulb is burned out. Change the bulb (be careful to put it in the same as the old one as it probably is 2 bulbs in one , parking and turn/stop) and you should be fine.

on ataurs with a duratec the thermostat is on the bottom radhose underneath the car. you will see a little housing near the radiator underneath the vehicle. they are a bit of a pain to get at

does it bark a lot just kidding I think you mean dodgy but I still have to guess what you mean by that I know these cars very well so lets see do you mean that your going uphill and the car loses engine power? your stepping on the gas but it's hard to make it up hills Yes/No? or do you mean that it's a loss of electrical power and the car dies out Yes/No? I'm going to go with the first one the check engine light is on and was/or is the engine running rough/shaking at the stop sign/traffic if so has the car been tuned up recently ? you see there's a lot of info missing here the best thing to do is go to auto zone & ask the parts person to check your trouble codes with a scanner they will do it for free this will tell you what's gone wrong with engine performance & they will tell you how much for parts only if you need a mechanic to work on your car go there and show him the scan reports of the codes listed

hey Brett, Google search 2000 ford Taurus owners manual and download it from ford for free on your phone/computer then you will always have it then look at roadside emergencies and you will find the fuse box / power distribution box diagrams #22 but what's wrong the switches maybe need to be taken apart and lubed with carbon conductive grease if the driver door switch has corrosion/oxidation on the connector pins it will not allow power to be transferred to the other door switches also inside the switch the contacts can burn from use you can use those emery board nail files that women use for there nails just trim it down and lightly sand off the burn try to do it very easy so you don't sand off the dot button contact then wash with alcohol q tips or spray then put the grease this should help if not the electrical circuit inside is shot and the switch needs to be replaced only use carbon conductive grease /////DO NOT USE DIELECTRIC OR LITHIUM GREASE THEY ARE THE WRONG STUFF FOR THIS ONE IS TO KEEP MOISTURE OUT OF SPARK PLUG BOOTS ////THE OTHER IS FOR EASY JOINING OF CONNECTORS ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE AND DOES WORK FOR ELECTRICAL TILL IT DRIES UP THEN IT'S USELESS AND STOPS THE CURRENT FLOW TRANSFER THROUGH THE CIRCUIT MG CHEMICALS IS THE PERFERRED GREASE HERE YOU CAN USE IT ON EVERY CONNECTOR FROM THE BATTERY TERMINALS TO SEAT SWITCHES AND ALL SENSORS JUST A TOOTH PICK TIPS WORTH WILL DO IT AND BE CAREFUL NOT TO PUT TO MUCH IT WILL JUMP THE PINS THIS IS HIGHLY CONDUCTIVE AND WILL BRING YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BACK TO 100% CURRENT TRANSFER YOU'LL FEEL THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT AWAY IN THE GAS PEDAL AFTER BATTERY TERMINAL CLEANING AND LUBING NEVER USE THE WIRE BRUSH ON TERMINALS IT MAKES THEM LOOSE AND YOU NEED THEM TO BE EXTREMELY TIGHT AND GREASED PLEASE POST BACK IF PROBLEMS PERSIST THE EXTRA INFO WAS A BONUS FOR YOU AND ALL WHO COME ACROSS THIS THREAD A 16 YEAR OLD VEHICLE NEEDS THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TUNE-UP AND NO BODY DOES THIS BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T TOLD TO ONLY OIL CHANGES & TUNE-UPS

You did not say what your ability level is for working on cars.. So i will be very basic . Please do not take offense. The first thing you want to look at is the battery and how the battery cables are attached to it, are they clean and tight ? If not remove them and clean and reattach tightly. Next you need to know what the voltage is in the battery. I would try jumping the car with battery cables from another vechicle.. if it turns over battery is probably dead, Another way is to use a volt meter and check the voltage of the battery it should be between 12 and 13 volts. If you do not have a volt meter they are available from Harbor Freight Tools for about $5-$6 a very good deal. If the battery does have the correct voltage the problem is further into the electrical systen. Next check all the fuses.. Look in your owners manual for the location of the fuse boxes.. It may have more than one location. On the newer cars there is a main power fuse which is uaually located under a black plastic cover near the battery and has large fuses in it.. If all the fuses are good and the battery has correct voltage then it could be your ign switch.. the electrical part of the switch is located on the steering column on the back of where you put in the key. you must remove the covers on the steering column to get at it.. actually a pretty easy job. The last one of these switchis i replaced i purchased from NAPA Auto parts. Although i buy a lot of parts from Rockauto.com because their service is so good really economical and they really deliver fast. If you are going to work on your own car i suggest you get a copy of the Chilton Manuaal for your car. Available from Rock Auto, any parts store, and possibly at your local library for free. It depends on what your problem is which activated the light. It could be something as simple as leaving gas cap off, that is how sensitive the emission lights can be triggered.
