Drain some of the coolant until you are sure it will not spill over when you remove the hose.
Remove the hose from the radiator .(Top) Hose. follow the hose to the thermostat housing. Remove the hose by removing the clamps.the thermostat is located in the housing. remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing. remove the housing. be careful to notice the position of the thermostat. Make sure you get the proper degree thermostat . Ask the vendor. give as much info as possible. mainly the size of the engine. remove the thermostat. You will get a new gasket with your new thermostat. Clean off the sufaces of the thermostat housing before installing the gasket.use a little grease to hold the gasket in place. and reinstall the new thermostat. replace housing and hose and refill with antifreeze/coolant. i hope this works for you and you vote for my answer.

2000 Pontiac Sunfire Fuel pump not working

OK here is the story. 1 1/2 year ago my car drove fine to work 20+ mile, but when I got off work the car would not start. Found that I was not getting any fuel, so I changed the fuel filter, check the relay and fuse and still could not get it to start. Had the car towed home and was just checking the engine harness when suddenly it started working again. not sure what i did if i did anything. anyway, 6 month later no problems, then there is the same problem again. did all the same checks and found nothing. was told to hit the tank with a hammer to see if the fuel pump would start working. after several good hits the pump started working and the car ran fine for the next entire year. Last night I went on a short drive, shut the car down for 10 min, went back to crank it and the problem has returned again. This problem has always had the exact same symptoms every time it happens. engine rotates, hits once or twice occasionally, and fuel pump dosen't operate. so I purchased a fuel pump to put in the car. pulled the old one out and for the sake of being certain I hooked up the new pump to make sure it would operated before I put it in the tank. The new pump DID NOT operate so that left me scratching my head. DId all the same checks as before. I measure 12 volts to all fuses in the box, relay clicks and was interchanged with the a/c relay. measured 12 volts at all fuses and realys in the engine compartment. Hooked up the Snap on scanner and found no codes. also could not get the pump to activate with the scanner. Tried hooking up another fuel pump and still does not operate. I will check for voltage at the pump harness when i tow it home tonight. this car really has me confused, I figure its either a short or open wire OR the computer is being really screwy. Also the fuel fump relay does operated when commanded to either by ignition or by the scanner. Any help would be appreciated.

check and see if you have an emergency shut off in the trunk. it will be on either side of the finder wall. it is there in case you get in a accident. the button pops up. make sure the button is in all the way. that shut off might be your problem.

Hello lindabg68: My name is Roger and I can answer your question for you. First make sure the system has no pressure. Locate the high side refrigerant line that comes up from the bottom of the condenser. Not the top line. Remove the bolt holding the line together. You should see the orifice tube in the long side of this tube. Please rate the quality of your answer. This is how we know you received the correct information. Should you need more help please just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

You need to raise the vehicle and start it. Remove the plug near where the passenger side driveshaft comes out. The head of the plug is 7/16. Trans fluid will stream out of the hole when the engine is running when the transmission is full, If fluid doesn't run out, fill the trans until fluid runs out. The fill cap is red and it is on top under and around the air cleaner box. If you need more help let me know.

I would say start by replacing the gas cap with a genuine GM product. If that doesn't fix it there are a few more suggestions here --> P0440 @ OBD-Codes.com

Damage to the cylinder heads or other parts of the engine will result if the temperature rises too high. breakage image by Rina from Fotolia.com

If the water pump in your Pontiac Sunfire is making noise or has started leaking, it's time to replace it. The water pump is responsible for moving water and coolant through the engine, to the radiator and back to the block. The coolant absorbs the heat from the engine, then cools down in the radiator before returning to the engine. If the water pump is not working, the engine will begin to heat up until the it overheats; damage to the cylinder heads or other parts of the engine will result if the temperature rises too high.

  • Remove the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench and set it aside. Isolate the cable from the battery so it can not accidentally make contact with the terminals.
  • Position a drain pan under the radiator drain on the bottom of the radiator. Open the valve with a wrench and allow the coolant to drain from the system. When the coolant stops draining from the valve, close the valve securely.
  • Remove the serpentine belt from the car by placing a ratchet and socket on the tensioner and turning it counterclockwise. Slide the belt off the pulleys and move the tensioner back to the free arm position.
  • Remove the alternator from the mounting bracket by removing the mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet. Lay the alternator off to one side where it will be out of the way.
  • Remove the three mounting bolts that hold the pulley on the water pump. Use a socket and ratchet to turn the bolts counterclockwise, then slide the bolts and pulley off the water pump flange.
  • Remove the four water pump mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet, then remove the pump from the engine block. Scrape off any remaining gasket material from the block with a gasket scraper
  • Position the new water pump with a new gasket into the hole in the engine block and install the four mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet, then torque them to 22 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
  • Slide the water pump pulley on to the front of the water pump and install the three mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 18 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
  • Reinstall the alternator into the mounting bracket and secure it by installing the two mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Reinstall the serpentine belt over the accessory pulleys.
  • Fill the radiator with new coolant at a mix ratio of 50 percent water to 50 percent coolant.

  • Connect the negative battery cable to the battery and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the car and allow it to run while filling the radiator with coolant. It will continue to take coolant until the system is full.
  • Replace the radiator cap and let the car run until it reaches normal operating temperature. Visually verify that there are no leaks from the pump and watch the temperature to ensure the car does not over heat and runs within the normal range
