I suggest you get one of those manuals people get nowadays to do it yourself.. My nephew use it to repair my car and it's totally repaired now. Here's the website he bought it from.

We need more info. A 'flange' is not a specific part. If the check engine light is on, take it to an auto parts store and have them 'read the codes' to find out why the light is on. Call ahead to see if they store does it for free.

So before you spend any money, I would check your shut-down relay- it might need to be replaced. Go to your fuse box on your car and find the shut-down relay and replace it with another one in there. For instance, if the air-conditioning relay is the same size, switch it onto your shut-down relay spot and see if your car works. If it does, then just go grab a new relay at your auto-parts store.

If thats not it, then I would definitely assume its the temperature sensor (ETC) which is located near the thermostat that twists onto your engine. It doesnt matter what the temperature is outside; if your ETC isnt working, it wont let your car continue running.

Hope this helps!

What you say is practically impossible as switching on the heater increases the amount of cooling, increases the amount of heat lost to atmosphere. Take away more heat from the engine and the temperature should fall.

The only thing that occurs to me is water circulating through the heater and back into the engine is moving the cooling water in a different direction; to the heater hot water outlet instead of the top hose and this brings water of a higher temperature into contact with the sensor...

I would think it would be something to do with the ignition relay. Im not familiar with this vehicle, but most vehicles from the 90's upwards have them fitted, its in the fuse box in the engine bay and one in the dash . you should hear it when you turn the ignition on. one relay does internal and other does the engine.
