1997 Chevrolet Astro - Page 9 Questions & Answers
Hello I have a 1997 Chevy Astro van with a
Ontop of the transmission there is a little tube. Its only about 2 inches long and the size of a drinking straw. Use a coat hanger or something simelar and clean it out. This is a pressure vent. They are known for plugging up with dirt and other stuff picked up from the road. Get it clean and replace the seal you should be fine.
My power steering and power brakes stopped working
After doing some research on your question, it looks as if there wasn't enough room in the '98 and up Astros to install a separate brake unit so those wonderful engineers tied the brake boost system into the power steering pump. If you lose power steering, you no longer have any brakes!
Check to see if your power steering belt is on tact, if it is, you will need to replace the power steering pump to get your power brakes back
Transmission
well, there are six of them. The two solenoids that give you the four gears are the two square ones on the back of the valve body. The big round one is the EPC (pressure) solenoid. All are inside
I replaced the check valve on the air conditioning
Sounds to me that you have a small vacum line disconected, look at where all the rest of them go and look for a open small hole and I would think that is the spot to plug it back in.Should you still not know the try going to a auto parts store for a Heater - A/C vacum line routing diagram.
Blower air just through defroster vents, not front vents
The problem is that the plastic lines that the air flows through get frail and cracks and breaks. What happens is when the hose breaks you loose vacuum and the system reverts to defrost mode. You should be able to see it from under the hood on the passengers side. You will have to find the area that is broken and then go to the parts store and get some rubber hose that will fit over the plastic hose.Take a piece of the plastic hose with you so you can get the right size hose to fit over it.This just happened to my 97 Astro van.I found the broken hose and repaired it with the rubber line and is working normal now.Hope this helps.Let me know what you find out.Good luck.
97 CHEVY ASTRO VAN - NON WORKING FUEL GUAGE
When you replaced the fuel pump, did you have you switch to the new harness? Check your wiring.
Could it simply be a relay?
My dash gauges went nuts but the car runs.
Do you hear the fuel pump running?
Did you replace the fuel filter? Should be on the frame under the driver.
Bosch fuel pumps are the way to go. The ret seem to **** out after 60,000.
Good luck.
The fan blower that blows cool or warm air through
You could just have a blown fuse but the fuse blew for a reason.
There are a few possiblities, I'll try to list them in the most likely order;
1) blower motor speed control resistors.
2) blower control switch
3) blower motor
The blower motor and speed control resistors are usually accessable from under the hood. Once you find the blower motor follow the wire that leaves the motor to where it plugs into the fire wall. This is the speed control resistor assembly. unplug the wires and remove the 2-3 screws that mount it to the fire wall. When you get it out you will find 2-4 wire coils on the back, these are the control resistors. If they are burnt or broken you need to replace them. If they look fine you need to test them with a Ohm meter or continuity tester. If they test good (having continuity) then you need to test the blower motor.
To test the blower motor, you'll need a jumper wire or an amp meter and test leads long enough to reach the battery from the plug in for the resistors. Plug the resistor assembly back into the fan plug. Fasten alligator clips to your jumer wire or use your test leads from the amp meter. Fasten your alligator clip to one end of the resistor assembly then touch the other end to the battery and listen for the blower motor to start. If it doen't start your problem is the blower motor. If it does start then your problem is most likely your fan control switch. Given the complexity of changing the switch and the many differences from vehicle to vehicle I can't tell you how to do that and I recommend you have a professional do it.
