Took the old starter out of chevy astro 87 and replaced it with new, when i try to start it makes no sound

Check for power on the small purple wire at the starter with the key in the crank position. If here is no power you will need to trace that circuit to see if its the neutral safety switch, ignition switch, or wiring in between. Need serpentine belt routing diagram 1987 Chev Astro Van 6 cyl

If nobody here provides it for you (I don't have your van's manual), then visit the chevy dealership and ask a not-too-busy shop foreman or a parts dept. person for a little assistance. A quick look in a repair manual for your van may also have it. It must have got scraped off or disappeared from under your hood, on a little sticker?

The oil pressure gage is

It is quite possible that the Oil pressure guage is faulty or else with a zero reading of the oil pressure the engine would have packed out. So removing the valve door will confirm if there is oil flow and confirm the guage. You can also remove the line to the guage and connect the line to a bottle, when the engine starts up the oil pressure will be displayed with a good pressure spray.... but be careful not be spray it all over with a loose joint.

I think the fuse for the lighter blew when we put

You should Have A Couple a fuse boxes under the hood make sure you check the one for the lighter an there is probably another back up one too. once you find the one for the lighter check if its broken replace it. Then if the radio still give you trouble try the back up one if its not broken leave it out for a few seconds then put back and restart.some models dont have that back up so just replace the fuse 2 or 3 dollars or at autozone.I hope that helps.

My son was driving his 1987 chevy astro van and

Ok do you have a spark? do you have compression? as both of these are needed to make the engine fire up along with fuel.
you may want to check if the cambelt is still intact too.

Need to remove and replace

If the head of the bolt is sheered off, your that much further ahead. Remove other bolts, get the pump and the brackets out of the way. With the pressure off the bolt, it is now easy to remove. If flush with mounting surface, get a ease out and drill bit (comes as a kit) tell them what size bolt your dealing with. Drill a hole in the center of the bolt. Use a center punch first to "make an impression" in the center, so your drill bit doesnt drift off center. Also, first be sure bolt dosnt move when tapped in a counter clockwise direction. (Righty tighty...lefty loosey) It'll save you a lot of work.

A little common sense goes a long way!

1987 4.3L starting difficulty

First off, I'm a great believer in the simple solution. If jumping the relay works, then replace the relay.

As far as a relationship between fuel pump operation and oil pressure, coincidence of operation.

If the new relay fails you, I'll need some more info:
  • Fuel Injected? If you turn the key on (not to start) do you hear the fuel pump come on for a sec then shut off?
  • Hard to start when hot, cold, doesn't matter
  • When it does start, does it idle ok? erratically? High? Won't stay running? Dies immediately?
  • Does it blow smoke? Black? Blue? White?
  • When driving, does it lack power? Stumble? Stall?
Hope it's the relay
