I have a 1991 buick skylark,3.3 l. It started dying when hitting the gas at the bottom of a hill. Slowly started dying here and there. Then it would only idle until I touched the gas and it would die.

How do you know the fuel pump is good ? Did you do a fuel pump pressure test with a test gauge ? Did you test the fuel pump electric circuit ? Is the check engine light on ? There is a fuel pump relay under the hood engine compartment . The right front behind the headlamp are four relays , the one to the left is the fuel pump relay .I'll send a link to a video on testing the circuit !There also is a fuse in the wiring near those relays , it's power for the fuel pump relay ! Or you have a bad fuel pressure regulator ! A plugged catalytic converter could do this , need to pull the O2 sensor an do a back pressure Test ! You may not have one. Just remove the bottom hose, or remove the engine drain plug put a garden hose in your radiator idle the engine while adding water this will flush your whole system. let the car cool replace engine plug add your antifreeze and your set.

does the temperature gauge show engine is very hot? could be a stuck thermostat, did you check for engine codes? this can be checked for free at most chain auto stores and give you insights into the problem.

Cranks fine, won't "catch"

From what u describe, I believe u have a starter and possibly a flywheel problem. When u turn the key to start the car, the starter gear engages w/ the flywheel, turning the flywheel, which turns the engine over. It sounds like the teeth of the flywheel and starter are worn, (they should mesh together smoothly) which would make the grinding noise u describe. If this is the case, the flywheel and starter would need to be replaced, and its a labor intensive job, as engine and trans. have to be separated to remove/install the flywheel. The rrrrrrr sound could be the starter gear spinning but not engaging. The starter gear extends on a shaft, then engages the flywheel. It is possible the gear isn't moving forward on the shaft, just spinning w/out engaging, making the rrr sound. So, I would recommend u remove the starter and have it tested (many parts stores will do this for free) and check the teeth on the gear to see if they are worn or broken. U will also be able to see a portion of the flywheel after the starter is removed, and u should check the teeth on it also. Let me know what u find, hopefully it's just a starter problem, and the flywheel is ok.

Car keeps shutting off

Put the hood up and with the car in a dark location, start the engine and look for a visible spark. If you see one, use a flashlight to see which wire is acting up and replace it. If that fails, turn the car off and check the wires to see if any are loose. Another possibility is to listen for a vacuum leak. You should also look for any other black hoses that are hanging in mid air and are not connected to their nozzles. Perhaps the mechanic bumped something accidentally.
