What is making my motor drag
Fuel is metered based on a signal the computer gets from the coolant temperature sensor. Over heating may have damaged it. If the wire connection is good the sensor may be bad, Change the sensor. It is very close to the thermostat (19MM deep well socket needed)

I replaced the fuel pump in my 2004 dodge neon and
There is a wire grounding out somewhere. Start from the fuel pump (u know that is good) and follow the wires inspecting them carefully for any chafing or corrosion. It should go up thru the floor around the back of the back seat. Pop the seat out and continue looking at the wires taking the wrapping off as you go. It may be bad under the carpet where water collects from boots and shoes, so look at these areas carefully for corrosion. Happy hunting!!

What to remove to replace timing belt 2004 dodge neon sxt
There are many things that must be done to replace a timing belt. It is not possible in this forum to list them nor give an adequate step-by-step instructional for this job. On many cars the only job harder than a timing belt is a full engine overhaul. If you really want to do this and you feel you have the skill set to pull it off, invest in the Haynes or Chiltons manual for the vehicle and follow their instructions. Be advised though, if you are biting off more than you can chew, you will end up costing yourself much more than you may have saved by doing it yourself....possibly with the loss of the vehicle's engine to boot.

Diagram sensors
They're all on the exhaust system. Just trace them from the exhaust manifold down the pipe to about the middle of the car.
My van has 3 of these.

What happens when you drive without a gas cap
ok on todays automobiles the gas cap does more than just seal the gas tank. Now they run a return line to the tank. this does 2 things. it returns un used fuel and vapors back to the tank , and it pressurizes the tank to help improve the fuel pump. Now as it is possible running without the gas cap may cause problems I am not 100 % positive that is your only problem. It sound like the knock sensor is detecting the knock you mentioned and is trying to retard the timing to fix it . In doing so it has retarded it to far causing the engine to loose power and eventually stall. I would first replace the gas cap. then run a good gas additive to a full tank of gas to clean out any water and dirt that may have gotten into the tank while the cap was off. now the issue of the knock as you described. is it a knock or a ping? A knocking sound is loud metallic hammering noise. a ping is a ting not very loud. if it is a loud metallic sound I would have a reputable mechanic check it soon, as it could be a serious issue. Ping can be caused by bad or weak gas or cheap low octane gas. I would run a mid grade gas in it and see if it fixed the issue.
