Hiya,

There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:

  • 1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
  • 1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
  • 1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
  • 1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.

Cheers,

Scott

Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on

Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on a 92 Ford Ranger, and what are the steps to remove the old one and replace with a new one? I've looked everywhere and can't get the info I need. Even bought a twenty five dollar book hoping this info would be in it. No luck. Thanks.

On the front of the engine beside the crankshaft...assuming it's a 4l engine. Also called the "variable reluctance sensor" (VRS) by Ford.daves944_0.jpg

Inside the frame rail on the driver's side. You'll need a 5/16" (8mm) socket if it is the type that is held in with a hose clamp, or a 10mm if it is the bracket type. Some of the lines are held in with white plastic clips, others by special springs. If it is the type without clips, you'll need a special tool to release them. Also, if it is the type without the plastic clips, make sure they gave you the right filter. If the new filter is shorter than the old DO NOT PUT IT ON. If you do, you will have to cut it off next time you have to change it as the tool will not fit in. The two filters look the same except the tubes are longer on the non-clip filter.

Transmission fluid leaking from bell housing when in gear.

I have a 1992 ford ranger xlt 3.0L automatic with transmission fluid leaking from bell housing when in gear. The trans oil is a brownish color. Truck will still go into gear and move until fluid starts to leak out. Some one told me it might be the seal???

If this is correct what are the steps to remove transmission and replace seal?

If you have never done this before,it may be best to take the truck to a shop or have some one with experience help you. You will need the truck up far enough to take out the transmission. The linkage and drive shaft has to be removed, then unbolt the transmission from the bell housing.Special tools may be needed to pull and replace the seal.
Transmission fluid needs to be changed since it is a brownish color.

no fluid going to rear brakes

Too many variables here. Is there fluid in the master cylinder in the rear brake portion? Does a brake warning light come on when the brakes are applied? Is the pedal solid when braking or does it feel spongy? You could have a problem with the metering or proportioning valve. Since brakes are a safety item I suggest you check with one of the shops that offers free brake inspections.
