What causes my truck to lose water, and what makes water get into my engine oil?
the water can get into the sump oil from pin holes in the timing case behind the water pump impeller
if you have water in the sump oil it will be a dirty grey color and the filler cap will have water droplets under it
If the oil is normal color then the loss could be from rusted welsh plugs
pressure test the cooling system to check for leaks

4.6 Windsor , how do I know timing chain is set right?
If you get the timing chain off even a single link, the engine may start and sound like it is running fine, but you will have a very serious reduction in power performance, poor fuel economy etc.. This would be very noticeable when driving it. There are timing marks on the gears etc. that indicate exactly how the chain goes on when re-assembling after teardown. If timing gets off too much in any direction, you can do serious damage to the engine as the valves opening and closing at the wrong time can cause overheating etc..
