Where is the fuel pump relay on a 1988 ford ranger
its a little black box under the hood ...
TIP
on these older (1988) rangers , they have a fuel shut off (incase of roll over) that needs to be reset on occasion.
This shut off is located in the passengers foot area just forward of the passengers door on the floor.
remove that kick pannel and press the red button on top of that to reset it.

diagram of where headlamp relay is found on an 88 ford ranger. my headlights won't come on. all other lights work inside and out. i have replaced my headlight switch, but that didn't work. i have replaced fuses as well, and that was not the problem either. so, i was told there is a headlamp relay in the high beam switch on the steering wheel column, but it is not in the manual that i could find so far. anyone have anything for me?
Your ranger'nt have a relay, you need to check the grounds to each light or you simply need two lights,or a dimmer switch.Check for power with a test light and if you hahe power replace the light,if you don't replace the dimmer switch.

I am looking for the vacuum diagram for a 1988 ford ranger with a 2.9L electronic fuel injected engine. The repair manual did not have it and the schematic I found with autozone.com didn't look right but it might be, hard to say. There is no carburetor on the engine and the schematic shows something labeled "carbon can". Where can I find the schematic.
Go to auto zone through this link And register for free then click select vehicle, add your vehicle and go to driveability and Emissions controls, than go to vacuum diagrams.

1988 Ranger, 2.3 , Oil light stays on. Where is the sensor or the oil pressure switch? How to trouble shoot?
For 1988 Ford Truck Ranger 2WD 2.3L FI 4cyl need to check two sending units:
Fig. 1: Low oil level indicator diagnostic chart
Fig. 2: Low oil level indicator wiring schematic REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Fig. 3: Typical low oil level sensor mounting-note: the
sensor is constantly submerged in oil, therefore, drain some oil out of
the engine before removing it
* Low Oil Level sensor, that is located in the engine oil pan, on all models
* Oil Pressure Switch, that is located under hood, driver side, rear engine area, below end of valve cover, mounted in cylinder head.
Check this procedure to know about the first choice, Low Oil Level sensor...
TESTING
(see Figures 1 and 2)
Use the accompanying diagnostic chart to help pinpoint low oil level sensor malfunctioning.
The ignition switch should be turned
OFF for a minimum of 5 minutes between checks to ensure that the electronic relay, which has a 5 minute timer, has reset.
(see Figure 3)
Always install a new gasket whenever the oil level sensor is removed
To install:
When installing the new gasket, the flange faces the sensor and the words "panside" should face the oil pan.

1989 Ford Ranger v6 2.9L 150k. Lifter noise for the past six months. But, yesterday the noise was worst, lose of power, oil pressure dropped to zero then went back up again. Just had the oil changed day before! Please help. Dave
the lifter noise might have been a bearing going bad or a piston ring. if you lost power you probably lost compression on one cylinder. Try checking your compression with a compression tester screwed into your spark plug socket. here is a site with a procedure.

I just bought an 88 ford ranger 4x4 4spd od 2.9 . At first it sounded like a sowing machine so my son and I changed the lifters and push rods and found one lifter colapsed. Well after filling it back up with 20w50 oil and adjusting the rockers it sounded nice. Then after warm up I noticed the oil pressure dropped from 40 down to 20 then at idle it goes down to 5. And it has a valve tap. One person tells me it could be a spun bearing another says pump this truck has 170,000 miles. help
my 2.9 would start ticking on the highway and drop to zero oil pressure after i got off highway. installed melling high volume pump problem solved

I need a diagram for where the vacuum hoses go to on a 1988 Ford ranger 2wd 2.0 carb. the diagram on the truck is no help. And the hoses are no longer there
Check out the autozone.com website and register the truck there. It doesn't cost anything and will give you access to an online repair manual for the truck. The vacuum diagrams should be available there. Hope this helped and best wishes.
