Yes it does, but only one way it can fit on the synchronizer...if you replace the synchronizer it usually comes with alignment tool.

I believe the Taurus is front wheel drive. If so, the CV or constant velocity joints are going or gone bad. These are the drive shafts if you will between the the transmission and the front wheels.
Horn wont work
There should be a Horn Relay in one of the power boxes. If the fuse is intact, the Relay may be bad.
Brake fluid
DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3 with all other properties being relatively the same. It shouldn't hurt anything, but as always I would recommend using exactly what the manufacturer calls for.

Sorry this happened to you. Your best repair would be to find the parts in a Salvage yard. By doing this, all of the connections would be plug-in and in the proper sequence. You would have the expense of the repair wire sections anyway and if you piece-meal all the damaged wires together you could have constant connection problems. Plus if any of the wires are melted in unseen areas, there could be more problems.There is a good Salvage yard site called Car-parts.com. It is Nationwide and gives you prices, photos, and all contact information for the parts. Some yards will offer warrantees. They ship to your house.You may find places in driving distance from your home.The Autozone website has Help sections at the bottom of the page. They need to be navigated between free and paid info. They have diagrams for the wiring. You will need to register on the site for free and you can look up 12 vehicles.Also check your fuses as the wires may have crossed and broke a fuse.
