1996 Nissan Maxima will not start?
I would check the mass air flow sensor. It could have a cobweb or spider web on it. It has to be real clean but when you clean it use carb and choke spray.

Sounds like the lens of the laser needs to be cleaned and easiest way is to buy a cd player cleaner but you can take the player apart and clean that lens with a Qtip and some rubbing alcohol.

Check if there is any leak in air at exahust and check the maf sensor.
Other possible that you have the fuel filter is dirty or the fuel pump is weak .

Yes, it will probably get messed up!! You might have already damaged the engine when you started it the first time. Re-check your cam and crank timing marks. Make sure they're EXACTLY lined up.
If in doubt, pay a mechanic to fix it!

Did you change the fuel filter. The fuel additive you used will not get the water out of an old fuel filter. Excessive water in the fuel could cause the misfire. The Maxima is probably due for timing belt due to age. Missing teeth on the timing belt will result in timing walk. The knock sensor is probably getting pre ignition signals. Look at the belt and get the fuel clean and go from there. (Do an OBDII Scan)

If "tapping" the SOLENOID ever worked... you
HAVE A DEFECTIVE SOLENOID.
Defective is all inclusive... and when "STUFF"
happens (burns up)... it is VERY LIKELY to cause
COLATERAL damage...
(FRIED WIRES & IGNITION SWITCH)
((fix that "STUFF" later)).
At the SOLENOID ... apply "B" battery DIRECTLY
to the "S" terminal of the SOLENOID...
IF it does not fully spin up the starter 100% of the time
